The Big 12 is looking to become the first FBS conference to sponsor women’s flag football, teaming up with the NFL on a league made up of at least six teams, according to Sports Business Journal...
quote:

“We’re trying to meet the moment,” Draper told the outlet. “Our goal here is growth. Our goal is to advance Big 12 membership opportunities and growth for [the conference]. We see this as an opportunity to do that.”

“It’s well documented what [the NFL is] doing around flag … It really helps with their help and focus on flag. With our focus on flag, we’ll be able to really accelerate the growth of the sport not only at the collegiate level, but at the high school level.”

“This effort is really an extension of us doubling down on growing opportunities for women at the collegiate level,” Draper continued. “… This is just an extension of that growth mindset and the opportunity for us to be innovative and first.”

Women's Flag Football has already started at the college level first in NAIA schools and now at the Division 2 & Division 3 levels in several conferences. The sport is currently sanctioned at the high school level in 17 states and another 21 states have been operating pilot programs. Florida is one of the earliest adopters and have in excess of 160 schools participating. The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) published their first rulebook for 2025-2026 this past May. The NCAA has classified it as an "emerging sport" and it continues to gain interest at a rapid pace. There's no doubt it will continue to grow and become more prominent at the high school and collegiate levels.
