My wife wants a grand highlander.
Let’s defer the discussions on buying a first year model car.
Which of your methods apply to this situation in the current market?
Do I have any leverage?

You know your marriage better than any of us I presume. Do you have any leverage?

Look at Houston dealerships.

Email them to negotiate price.

Fly over to pickup car.

Profit

They look good. Are they in stick now or would you need to be put on a wait list? If it is a list, you won't get anything off msrp.

The price is the price on a Grand Highlander for many months. Find the lowest one and go pick it up.

On the topic of buying a new car - has anyone had any experience recently with obtaining "very well qualified" buyer status to get a favorable APR? Going to have to replace my wife's 15 year old car pretty soon. Normally wouldn't consider buying a new car, but if I can get a 1.9% rate its hard to pass up. We have excellent credit scores and above average incomes, but just wondering if that is something they flaunt and are very selective about when they give those rates out.

Any manufacturer based financing deals are for anybody with "good" credit. Never known any secret deals. It's all in what vehicle you want. You want something "hot"? Probably not much deal to be had. Want something that has good/too much inventory? Maybe some good captive finance rates to be had. There are "deals" out there if you want something like a $130k Benz EV LOL. If you want a Tundra TRD PRO or a Sequoia, not so much.

NEVER, don't do it

Father bought a Hornet, loads of upticks, he has issues with it, that the dealers and mechanics have no clue how to fix.

Warning lights come on, whole dash system went out while driving, locks and power windows just move or lock themselves. Collision side and rear lights will stay on for whole drive, or go off as supposed.

Fiat/Chrysler asks him to email their engineering department about any new bugs.

He fricking hates it now, and is miserable.

Ironically, we live in Houston and reached out to all of the Toyota dealerships within about a four hour radius. Lake Charles Toyota got us the best deal and was excellent to work with.
