Don't overanalyze the decision. Buy an established, reputable brand and get to the range instead of shitting around for 6 months worrying about making the right choice. If you don't like it you can sell it later. You can't go wrong with the brands suggested.

The whisper is not super quiet, and it is by no means a whisper. It is however a good pellet gun that I have used to drop squirrels at 40m.
The penetration you get will vary alot based on the pellet. The lighter PBA pellets seem to be more accurate at longer ranges, but this is really jus...

I doubt he is breaking the sound barrier. Switching to a heavier pellet may help if that is the problem, but the sound of a "quiet" pellet gun like the Gamo's is still quite loud.
