Purchased one at Academy for the "varmints" in my back yard. I live in the 'burbs so needed quiet. Well, let me tell you the Ruger pellet gun ain't not Daisy. Sounded like a small caliber deer rifle in the back yard, had the dogs barkin' up and down the street. Wife and kids thought I had come home w/ fireworks

Any gun with a muzzle velocity above the speed of sound (1,126 fps) is going to have a moderately loud crack. You'd be better off getting the .22 version of that pellet gun (which will be subsonic) or shooting subsonic rounds through a traditional .22 rimfire rifle.

eta: you could also try shooting a heavier .177 pellet. Beeman sells them.

I doubt he is breaking the sound barrier. Switching to a heavier pellet may help if that is the problem, but the sound of a "quiet" pellet gun like the Gamo's is still quite loud.

Benjamin .22 FTW! Got it from my dad, who got it from his dad. The thing is ridiculous, 3 pumps and it is game over.

Gamo Whisper

Or you can get those .22 rounds that have no powder, only primer. Super quiet.

Ever shot this Gamo? How fast and is it considerably quieter?

I shot one. I don't own one, but I shot someone else's. If my memory serves correctly, it sounded about like a Red Rider BB gun.

Edit: Oh, and I don't know what the FPS is on it.. but my buddy has killed coons and squirrels with it.

I just wonder how far those little .22 bullets will shoot. Not far I'm sure. All the comments on them were pretty good though.

I've seen those in action too. My buddy shot a couple of mice ... INSIDE his cabin with them when I was there.

I am sure they don't shoot far at all, but they are super super quiet. We were playing cards and this fricking mouse kept scurrying around in the shadows. We could hear him. So he puts a cracker with peanut butter on the floor, about 12 feet away, and when the little bastard came out, he put one round right through him. It only put a dent in the floor, not a hole.

Well, they won't cycle a semi auto action, but I am sure you could shoot them in a bolt action or lever action rifle.

Here is a review from Cheaperthandirt.com...

quote:

Just received a brick of these little guys. Tried them first in my Ruger MK III. Too loud for suburban shooting. Sounds like a really loud firecracker only much sharper. Way louder than my old Benjamin 310 or Benjamin HB17. Next in my Marlin 981T. Impressive!!! Barely a whisper, accurate and powerful up to around 75 feet. I put down two thieving racoons the first night at 60 feet, open sights-one shot each. In the 981T they make less noise than my slingshot. BE ADVISED THEY ARE LETHAL.

I own a Marlin 981T. Its a tubular mag, bolt action rifle. Great little gun for the money. There's other reviews on there of people saying they shoot them all day long in rifles with no problem, despite the warning at the time of purchase that this is dangerous.
