Any reason your like Springfield over other brands?

Springfield...sigs..colts...kimber will be the brands you need to look at. I have a Springfield and like it a lot good value for the cost. Kimber are not what they use to be, I think they are good guns just over priced. Sig makes a nice quality gun as well. And then of course there is colt. Again they make a nice gun just a little over priced. You are paying for the colt. Try and put a lot of them in your hands and see what you ones you like best.

Tex was so sure of himself that he said it twice! And I agree with him. Springfield is a solid choice. You can get in one for anything from 600 for the GI to 1500 for one with all the bells and whistles. 1911's are works of art and they all have there quirks. Look around on the interwebz for things to look for like fit and finish. Tons of info out there. Colt has gotten their crap together after some poor years and are again making nice weapons. Kimber seems to be on the decline and Springfield is putting out solid weapons. Any better and you jump to Wilson combat or les Baer. Those make your wallet hurt.

Don't overanalyze the decision. Buy an established, reputable brand and get to the range instead of shitting around for 6 months worrying about making the right choice. If you don't like it you can sell it later. You can't go wrong with the brands suggested.

There've been some good suggestions already re:: higher end 1911's. Thought I'd share my personal experience in case you decide to sdend less money.

Although I've been buying/shooting handguns nearly 35 years, I bought my first 1911 just a few months ago. I didn't want to spend a whole lot since I wasn't sure I'd like the 1911 enough to justify a more expensive one. I ended up w/ an "American Classic," made by Metro Arms in the Philippines. At first, I was a little leary about buying a gun made in the Philippines. There are two large manufacturers in the Philippines making a number of quality, entry level 1911's (Rock Island Armory, Citadel, American Classic and Firestorm). These guns are well-repected on the 1911 forums on the 'net. For $450 I got a Commander sized 1911 w/ Novak style rear sight, beavertail safety, extended slide release/safety and combat trigger/hammer. After a couple 100 rounds, I'm very pleased. In addition, it's nice and slim for concealed carry.

There are a lot of very nice higher priced 1911's out there (Kimber, Colt, STI, Springfield, etc), but there are now some good options if one doesn't want to break the bank trying out a gun one has never had before.
