re: Reason article on luxury goods and class: don't mind the gap - RoyMcavoy
Jumping in late here, but recently finished Tom Sowell's "Wealth, poverty and Politics". It is a truly enlightening view of poverty and wealth around the world and especially in the US. The author of this article would no doubt agree with Tom....

re: When did minimum wage become living wage? - RoyMcavoy
if i could jump in for a bit...i see that your discussion is contingent upon the absence of a MW. In that scenario i think a larger share of the folks on welfare rolls would be working. I say that because there are currently no jobs below the MW. If there is no MW, then there will be many more job...

re: When did minimum wage become living wage? - RoyMcavoy
Lets try to separate the intent of the MW and the effect of the MW...the intent of the MW is that no worker will earn less than a certain wage, while the effect of a MW is that no employment will exist below a certain wage. Do you think that is a good idea? ...

re: Identity Politics - RoyMcavoy
historically speaking, in America, a group's political power has not led to economic improvement. In other words, there isn't much evidence in America to suggest that a lagging group must first attain some degree of political power in order to advance economically. In reality, quite the opposite is...

re: Poverty is a moral failure - RoyMcavoy
poverty is relative. in today's US, if you're in poverty you probably still get satelite tv, smartphone, wifi just about everywhere you go, food assistance, housing assistance, daycare assistance, effectively pay no taxes. I fail to see what poverty has to do with morals. ...

re: New data: nearly 80% of black babies born to single moms, up 5% from 2012 - RoyMcavoy
What's troubling is that less than 1/5 black babies were born to unmarried mothers in the 40's (lower rate than whites), and now 8/10 are being born to unmarried mothers. ...

re: Teachers are under paid...babysitters make more... - RoyMcavoy
Teaching is a job, therefore there is a labor market for this occupation. Teachers will get paid what the market will bear. While it is false to say that every teacher currently earns the correct compensation based upon their production. It may be fair to say that teachers aren't actually qui...

re: Half-Moon plans to solve social inequality in New Orleans - RoyMcavoy
The left and the intelligentsia seem to operate under this assumption that outcomes of any kind, especially employment or hiring demographics, would be equal if they were allowed to arrange society a certain way. ...

re: Dan Coats confirmed as director of national intelligence - RoyMcavoy
playing devil's advocate here... would Coats not be considered part of the swamp? A cursory glance at his resume' shows that he's served in both houses, served as an ambassador and a lobbyist, and has spent a considerable portion of his life working in DC. ...

re: Denise Marcelle: 'Absolutely crazy' police response time - RoyMcavoy
It wasn't a 45 min response time, per Coppola. Article says officers responded to call at 745 but didn't find the victim. Guess she didn't find a nut after all......

re: Arbiters of Truth: the Leftista Media? - RoyMcavoy
the intelligentsia are always happy to be the moral beacon for the rest of us who are too dumb to understand the issues. The main reason for this is that they pay no price for being wrong. If an engineer designs a bridge that fails, he/she is held accountable for that. Those whose end products ar...

re: Today is the 10 year anniversary of Rich Rod saying no to Alabama. - RoyMcavoy
Saban would never have ended up back at LSU even if rich wouldve taken bama job. Look at the way Moore went about hiring Saban. He wouldn't accept No for an answer and he paid what Sexton demanded. And it was the best investment bama has ever made. That was back in 07 and look what LSU did in '1...

re: Why is Ohio State at 3? - RoyMcavoy
here's a question: If the big10 is the best conf this year, why is OSU only ranked 3rd? Seems like OSU got in on the committee's belief that the BIG10 is the strongest conf this year. But they didn't afford PSU that same credit for winning the strongest conf. ...

re: Eye Test = Blue Blood Media Darling - RoyMcavoy
Right now, The best scenario for an individual team is to play decent OOC opponents and have the rest of your conference play harder opponents. However, if your entire conference does that your team is screwed.
I think it's important to WIN OOC games, not just schedule them...

re: Eye Test = Blue Blood Media Darling - RoyMcavoy
idk if its a blue blood thing or not but, conf championship games apparently mattered in '14 when tcu dropped from 3 to 6 in the final ranking and was told a conf title game was what kept them out. This yr the sec and big 10 titles games didn't matter at all. i know they're not the same exact situa...
