Why do majors extend invitations to past champions who can't beat me in a two dollar Nassau The masters is maybe an exemption, but the Open and PGA. Come on give your slot to somebody that can compete, T. Hamilton, O'Meara. I mean if you are Jack, Arnie, Tiger I can see some fan appeal. Todd Hamilton?

lol ... every past champion in this or any other major would beat you by 40 shots ... regardless of how much of a 'scratch' golfer you think you are ...

Which currently living major champion do you think you could handle even on your home course?

This should be interesting

Because they fricken earned it.

Watson almost won the Open at 59. Norman almost won the Open in his 50's. Langer last year and Freddy contended at the Masters this year.

Some of them should graciously decline the invitation. Watson was a freak that 1 year. Freddie competes at the Masters for 2 days then drops off. There are a bunch of hungry young frickers who should be in the field before Mark Omeara

Couple things on this:
1) Decline an invitation to a major? frick that they earned it.
2) Those hungry young frickers had a chance to qualify for these events and were unable to do so in one way or another. MO earned a spot in this field no matter how long ago it was. Those players did not.

It's not like it's a blanket exemption for life.

If you win the U.S. Open, you're exempt in the U.S. Open for 10 years, and you're in the Masters, Open Championship and PGA Championship for five years

If you win the British Open, you're in the Open until you're 60, and you're in the Masters, U.S. Open and PGA Championship for five years

Give the past champions a ten year exemption, after that they have to qualify.

Mark O'Meara is 1 under thru 10 holes today in 25+ mph winds.

I'm sure you'd be the same.

You aware that Freddie being in the masters or wd'ing has zero impact on anyone else getting in the field?

I've wondered this, does the past champion exemption take a spot from someone else?

Not at the Masters, and not technically at any of the others (but other players would get in the field if they WD).

I just mean those past champions who fulfill the necessary qualifications are the 1st people invited by saying they're not technically taking anyone else's spot.

I feel pretty confident I could beat Crenshaw at this point

I would lay out a grand saying you couldn't.

I mean, I love Ben, but when's the last time you've seen him play golf? He's not very good right now. If the course was 6800 yards or more, I'd feel relatively confident.

If not Ben, I think I could take Charles Coody. He's 80.

Ben just shot 85 at Augusta on an emotional trek around as his last Masters. You'd need strokes to beat him.

I meant to say at any course over 6800 that's not Augusta. Crenshaw is a course whisperer there.

ETA: He also shot 91 in his first round and has gotten significantly worse in the last two years.

I'll just say I've never played with you so you might be a gamer, but people way underestimate how good tour pros (even washed up old bangers) are than even scratch guys

It's not even the same conversation
