Driving range mats vs. real grass

Which do you prefer? And do you have any perceived pros and cons of each.
I prefer grass, the range I'm on only has mats.
Mats may teach you to hit off a tighter lie, but don't provide the feedback for fat or thin.

Mats are the worse. Good way to break a club too.

Grass. Not close. The tight lie thing is dead wrong. The mat won't give any feedback on your divot/dig/ground interaction of a true tight lie.

Grass, easily. Mats do not teach you to hit off a tight lie. My club bounces off the mat and will pop the ball up for me.

If you want to actually work on your swing and get better, only go hit on grass.
Hitting off mats will lead to bad habits because the way you contact the ball on a mat is not indicative of how you will contact the ball on grass, unless your swing is very flat.
If you insist on hitting off mats, I would only use your longer clubs i.e. driver, 3 wood, long irons - hitting shots with your 7,8,9 irons off mats will do more damage than good for your game because you can counteract a flaw in your swing by just hitting down on the ball and the mat will level out the club face at impact, so you think you are hitting it straight.

10-4. I'm in DC and most places only have mats. Less range time, more playing time then.

mats are for sweepers. grass is for trappers.

I've heard you should put a towel behind the ball if you hit off the mat, to get feedback if you hit it fat.

Course - Grass
I have a 4'x6' mat at my house... I don't want to tear up my yard.
I buy a cheap 56° SW from Academy and just keep it out there in my ball bucket and replace as needed.
I have a flag at about 90 yds depending on where I move the mat for mowing.
I still get pretty good feedback of when I hit it fat... I'm pretty honest with myself and know the feel of a stroke that hits the mat before the ball.
