re: Gating canals in houma area - Scrowe
Most of the gates deal with hunting leases. Nothing like spending several thousand dollars a year on a lease for some a-hole to go rape it while you are at work because there is an opening into your lease from a canal.
I can relate to this and we aren't even in the marsh, just alo...

re: Gating canals in houma area - Scrowe
We live in a state that allowed Biloxi Land to bully them into placing restrictions on Biloxi marsh WMA. That WMA is 100% privately owned and lease by the state of Louisiana. What would have happened if they told Biloxi land to piss off? Would they have thrown up a gate at Bakers canal and ev...

re: Gating canals in houma area - Scrowe
Right or wrong, public or private canals, these landowners have a reason they put up the gates. That reason is a-holes.
This sums it up in the shortest way possible. The gates wouldn't be going up if there wasn't a problem....

re: Gating canals in houma area - Scrowe
I approached Lafourche parish sheriff and was laughed out of the room.
Here lies a problem, if the law enforcement won't deal with it then you can't blame the landowners for taking things into their own hands. Luckily the enforcement agencies where we are take it very seriously....
If they put the gates on their land and not our water their wouldn't be a problem!
You still don't get it, they are putting the gates on their land....

re: Gating canals in houma area - Scrowe
Only if in accordance with the law the canal isn't a state owned river bottom. For instance if I buy property that is owned on both sides of the Mississippi River, that doesn't give me the ability to gate it off. Using the Mississippi River in this case because it is a known state river bottom...

re: Gating canals in houma area - Scrowe
Except we don't because some of those state claimed water bottoms are now silted in to the point they can not be navigated safely. The state also gave up their lease to several areas in the marsh as well.
Sounds like a lot of this is on the state, their upkeeping process, and them...

re: Gating canals in houma area - Scrowe
What happens if Delacroix land decides to gate off bayou gentilly? Do we just shrug our shoulders and thank them for being so generous up until that point?
Just because a company owns all the land around a canal doesn't mean the canal isn't a state owned river bottom....

re: Gating canals in houma area - Scrowe
I would also like to see an increase in saltwater license fees. Separate saltwater from freshwater licenses. Force people fishing tidal marsh to buy an annual pass. Sort of a tax stamp if you will, to help fund the protection efforts. This way people who don't fish above the saltwater line pa...

re: Gating canals in houma area - Scrowe
This doesn't fit because your private road does not cause the public road to become impassible. You are also not receiving tax payer support to help save your private road from the same fate as the public road you destroyed in the process.
The state has the right to change what is ...

re: Gating canals in houma area - Scrowe
Arky friend of mine told me that the big navagable rivers up there have public access every so many miles as required by law.
Are these waterways owned by the state? The problem here is state owned river bottom versus private owned river bottom. It has nothing to do with the canal...

re: Pope Francis Will Stand With Migrants at U.S. Border - Scrowe
Tell the Pope that when he tears down the walls of the Vatican and gets rid of the Swiss Guards, he can posture about US immigration policy.  Until then...he can frick off.  and I am a Catholic.
My sentiments exactly. Not only that, the Vatican isn't taking in many refu...

re: Gating canals in houma area - Scrowe
I have talked to cops and game wardens and they don't want the private canal issue to come up.
May be true for the marsh, but in other parts of the state they are eager and willing to help run people off and write fines. I will say the marsh is a totally different animal than sa...

re: Gating canals in houma area - Scrowe
The risks were accepted because the reward was great at the time. It was near sighted.
The state was part of this goof up years ago and allowed it, and as you said many of those involved are now gone.
So now we are gating off canals in an effort to protect property right...
