I am planning on surprising the family with a trip to Washington DC tomorrow. A last minute, spur of the moment trip. We plan to mainly hit Smithsonian Friday and Saturday. Does anyone have any hotel recommendations that are relatively safe for families? Looking for something near the Smithsonian.

The Jefferson is the nicest hotel I've ever stayed at. Look into it, sometimes they deals that go for 300 a night, which is most nice places in DC.

The Willard is my favorite.

I stayed at the Capital Hilton and enjoyed it. You can't beat the location. The White House is in clear view a couple of blocks away. It's also a block from a Metro stop.

The sofitel was great and you had a metro entrance right there

I've always stayed in Crystal City near the Pentagon. Hotels are usually around $100+ cheaper than the DC ones, and there's a Metro station there. It's only a 5 minute Metro ride to the National Mall/Smithsonian station. There's a Marriott and a Westin right across the street from the Metro station, and a Hampton Inn a block away.

Went a few months ago and stayed at the Grand Hyatt on H St. NW. Was only about a 15-20 minute walk to the mall area.

We stayed at the Sofitel last year as well. Decent price point, easy walk to the Mall, close to Metro, excellent service.

I stayed at the pheonix park hotel close to the capitol. It was a nice hotel. The hotel had a Irish bar downstairs that was jumpin every night. They had I've Irish music and more red headed lassies than you could shake a stick at.

We stayed at the Embassy Suites in Arlington. It's right across from the subway station.
We did a night time Monuments tour. Totally worth it.

FWIW, it's a terrible time to go to DC. Absolutely crawling with families/kids, mall museums are completely crowded, and hot enough to be thoroughly unpleasant when doing all the outdoor stuff on the mall. Wait until school starts & do a weekend in late Sept/Oct once the weather cools a bit.
As for hotels, I like staying in Penn Quarter; you can get a decent place like the Courtyard by Marriott (9th & F Sts) for about $160/night at this time of year.
