I am trying to decide on if spirit airlines from New Orleans to vegas is ok. It's 200 dollars cheaper than other airlines. I've heard horror stories but have also heard it's fine if you know what you are getting in to. Any experiences?

Pay the little bit of extra $ for a more space seat, will help!

Never flown them but when I was at MSY on last trip, I saw their overweight bags start at 40 lbs?

Be aware that they routinely are late on there departures and arrivals. If you arent in a hurry to get there, and only bring a back pack, you should be ok. Carry ons will cost you $26

$200 less, that's huge! Spirit flies one of the newest fleets in the industry. Other than their wacky business model, you won't know any difference, on a one time flight.

Eta- Just pack light.

I've used them about 15 times now and I've never had a problem. I'm using them for short flights to Dallas though. Once to Chicago wasn't bad either just a little long sitting that crammed.

I flew it from DFW to Orlando earlier this year. It was fine.

Used them on two international flights to South America -- probably saved $300-$500. No big issues other than our flight from Colombia getting delayed for a couple hours.

I rode their longest flight offered, FLL to Lima, Peru.

I won't lie, it was uncomfortable, but well worth saving the $400.

Did a day trip to Minneapolis from DFW last year and took them on the way back (flew AA going up). It was fine since I only had a backpack on me.

Just be informed and prepared. They nickel and dime for every little thing. I'm not a fan, but it works for some looking to find the absolute cheapest way from A to B.

I'd rather pay for a little more comfort than being a sardine.

I'm usually here on it. But saving $200 might be worth it. Just know that they literally charge extra for everything. It's been a few years since I flew with them, but I think the base price only gets you on the plane. You actually have an extra charge for your seat (which is mandatory, so why not just include it). I might be wrong on that, but that's what I remember.

Bottom line, it's fine. Just don't expect your final price to be $200 cheaper. I have a friend who is a rather large guy (6'4, >300 lbs) and he flew Spirit last year for a guys trip. His starting price was about $150 less than any others, and after he'd finished paying for everything (checked bag, larger seat, etc.), he broke even.

The only time I fly Spirit is when I'm going from Chicago to Minneapolis. It's an hour flight and worth the reduction in costs.

Everyone is spot on upthread....there will be extra charges if you fly carrying much more than the clothes you're wearing. I use to fly from Cali to Vegas...I'd rather spend the extra $$$ at the blackjack tables.
