Has anyone purchased airfare to a connection separately from 2nd flight?

I priced a trip to Tahiti from New Orleans that connects in LAX. When same trip was priced leaving from LAX it was 5k cheaper which is a completely ridiculous difference. I realize i would have to get luggage and check in. But for that amount I could spend a day in Los Angeles easily too.

Yes you have to be very careful here, because one of your flights could be changed. As said, going overseas you also have Customs to deal with so you need a ton of extra time for a flight. For $5k sure it would be worth it, but I wouldn't do it for say $100-200 in savings.

We've done it before to save around $400/ticket. I forget where we were going, but it made more sense to take an earlier direct flight to the connection city and then check back in for your later flight. Layover was in ATL.

Flight from LAX doesn't leave until close to midnight. Should be plenty of time to get there from MSY.

Coming back is tricker and would likely require a hotel stay then leave for new orleas next day. But that is the only time I would have to deal with customs as well for the flight.

Would do this in a heartbeat if the pricing was exactly what you posted. Book an early morning flight to LAX, grab your bags and spend the day at venice or wherever then check back in for your flight to Tahiti. On the way back, I would give yourself 4 or 5 hours if possible

ETA: What are flight times on the return flight? On the way there with a midnight departure, I'd say you were safe with a 9am- noon departure out of MSY getting in midday/early afternoon

Don't go through Customs until you land in the destination country.

Bigger issue on OP scenario is claiming baggage, re-checking it, then having to clear TSA again. Not sure how LAX is spread out in regards to domestic and international flights. That could pose a problem as well, but probably not a huge one. I'm guessing you'd need 3 hours, minimum, between flights. I'd want around 5 myself to avoid problems with delays, long TSA lines, etc.

I would have looked at this trip earlier if I knew the prices were what I see from lax. Hilton overwater bungalo in Moorea 6 nights with flight from LAX is about 2600 pp. If you try to fly from msy its just over 10k for 2.

Flight back I would just stay in LA since fights from Tahiti gen land very late evenings.

Thinking of doing this for anniversary and have the wife thinking I'm taking her to L.A. get luggage and everything in L.A. then walk over to the Air Tahiti counter with our luggage before I tell her.

Flew from Dallas to Tahiti through LAX last December- we had to exit the domestic terminal, go outside to get to the international terminal, wait for the Air Tahiti gate to open, get tickets, then back through security. If that is still the case, it shouldn't be any different booking the way you've proposed.

ETA: we stayed 6 nights at the Intercontinental on Moorea, it was so awesome down there.

FWIW and this is a lesson learned in many ways, I did this recently in Dublin.

We flew Air France/Delta (Delta) from Destin to Atl and then to Dublin for $400. Then did Dublin to London for $69 each. Instead of doing $1200-1400 for other VPS to London tickets.

Going over it worked flawless.

Coming back, it was a mess. Couldn't check into Delta international flight without going to a Delta Desk. So I would of had to go to London Heathrow a day early possible or we had to do it in Dublin. Which meant having to go through EU Customs to get to the Delta Desk because to transfer flights in Dublin we had to have a boarding ticket. So we had to go back through security in Dublin and through US customs in Dublin, as well as a second level of security because of Ireland and EU customs. All in a 2 hour layover.

So you should be fine doing what you are saying through LAX. Don't do what I tried, it sucked. Unless we had like a 5 hour layover. Which financially still would of been worth it but still a stressful PITA.

So I would have to get my luggage no matter what. That's good to know.

Well, not sure if it matters but we flew Virgin from Love to LAX and they checked our bags through to Air Tahiti. We didn't have to worry about that, but still had to do the out/in.

We didn't know what we were doing but a concierge at the airport told us the way to go. We heard rumors of a direct path but I don't think it's possible.

It is a long day of travel, but absolutely worth every penny. Such a beautiful, ridiculously remote part of the world.

Just don't forget to pack her passport!

Awesome move, BTW.

That's what we did. Heading out to the Philippines we flew from MSY to LAX and had like a 3 hour layover before heading out and coming back we landed at about 3:30 pm, saw the sunset from the Santa Monica pier and spent the night in LA

Not only did it save me money but it mean my I didn't have to spend 5+ hours in the airport for layovers in my way home
