My wife and I have some time between semesters the first week of August. We had originally planned to just fly down to Punta Cana for some beach time but decided to save that for something nicer later on.

I started doing some research on things within driving distance of BR and landed on Texas Hill country, specifically Fredericksburg. We plan on driving straight to Fredericksburg and staying there 2 or 3 nights at the Hoffman Haus. Then going to Austin for a night or two. And finally making our way to Houston for a night then home.

I have looked over things to do in Fredericksburg and decided on wine tours, distillery tour, and eating at some restaurants. Does anyone have any specific recommendations on restaurants and wine tours I should be looking at?

Now for Austin I am completely lost, I have only been there once on a bachelor party. I really liked the city when I visited and feel like there is a lot to do, I just don't have an idea where to start. It looks like I can stay at the Congress hotel for around $200, so that general area would be where we would probably venture from.

Finally Houston, I just need a good hotel, something to check out while in Houston and where to get a good meal that night.

I appreciate any feedback I can get, I have a general idea of what I want to do, just would really like some help pointing me in the right direction of specific places.

Don't book that hotel, or any hotel, you can get an Airbnb in the same area for less.

What's your price range?

something to check out while in Houston

An Astro's game if they are in town(finally playing like a professional team again), Museum of Natural Science or Fine Art

where to get a good meal that night

This all depends on what part of town you stay in. I have a list of places that is massive.

Around $200/night, so nothing crazy. Would rather put money towards a good meal than the hotel.

Thank you for the other suggestions as well.

Magnolia, Zaza, or Icon. In that order for me, but only b/c of location. Zaza is probably the best, but the med center area location isn't that desirable for a one night stay, unless the zoo or natural science museum is on your agenda.

Magnolia has a great rooftop pool where you can see into Minute maid park when the roof is open. And it's walking distance to a ton of food and booze. I've stayed there for 2 anniversary getaways and always enjoyed it.

Did Reef last time I stayed there, and I would definitely recommend it.

I used to stay at the la Quinta in downtown Austin. It's pretty cheap, close to everything and decently nice.

I was down on the Greenbelt during lunch today. Can't wait to get out into the hill country.

This is 10 minutes from my house:

Wineries - Pedernales, William Chris, Lewis

Garrison Brothers bourbon is great

We loved an afternoon/evening in Luchenbach. Of course it didn't hurt that Billy Joe Shaver was playing!

Beautiful area. Haven't been back in ten years but want to go again for sure.

Thank you for the suggestions, seems like I have a lot of choices. Maybe I could stay in Fredericksburg an extra day over going to Austin.

Fredericksburg:

1) Eat at Otto's
2) Pacific War Museum
3) Wineries: Grape Creek, Pedernales, 4.0, Becker
4) Pedernales Brewing Company
5) LBJ Park - the Texas Whitehouse
6) Luckenbach
7) Pioneer Museum
8) Otto's, Fredericksburg Pie Company, Friedhelm's
9) Airport Diner - it's a 50s recreated diner at the local airport

I would not bother with Austin. Instead, spend that time either doing a day rafting the Guadalupe River or go to San Antonio.

Houston:

1) Catch a Stros game
2) NASA
3) Tons of museums in the museum district
