After typing up everything in a long post and then getting the stop sign, we'll try again...

Group of 4-5 coworkers (including myself) need to head to Austin from Baton Rouge for a conference June 7/8. Conference starts 9am on June 7, ends at 4:30pm June 8th. We're trying to decide if we should fly or drive. Who here has done this drive before? Google maps is showing 6 hr 45 min so not entirely sure if it's worth doing the drive twice within a matter of 3 days (there and back).

Option 1: Fly from BR to Austin at $344 a person

Option 2: Drive from BR to Nola and fly on southwest for $280 roundtrip. Leave Tuesday the 6th, return either the 8th pm or 9th am.

Option 3: Rent a car in BR and drive to Austin at $150 total per car (would probably take 2 cars for 5 people).

I usually say 6 hours is my max for a roadtrip (especially with coworkers), but it looks like the total for the rental car would be around $300 + gas. Airfare would be over $1400 for 5 people + taxi from the airport. Any suggestions are appreciated

is work not paying? if so then obviously fly

its an easy drive- I10 to Houston then 290 to Austin, however you have the huge wildcard of Houston and Austin traffic, which could change everything.

its probably closer to 7 hours. i would still drive because its an easy drive, but thats me.

I assume you are not paying for it, so I would say absolutely fly. 7hrs each way with co-workers...

The drive sucks. $280 round trip from Nola is a steal. I can rarely find a SW flight for less than $400. Austin's airport is even worse than MSY if that's believable.

Personally, it would depend on how well you "socialize" with the co-workers.

If you are decent friends with them, I'd consider renting a van and driving.

As others have said, if work is paying, then its a no-brainer.

Work is paying for this trip, but my boss asked me what I thought we should do travelwise because I think he wants to save some $$. I also have a feeling me and my boss would be the main ones driving since everyone else is an international student. I'm going to push to fly (at least fly myself)

I've made this drive about 40 times... Many times I have done the round tribunal the same day, only spending 30 min or so in BR (to pick up kids).

If you drive - stay the hell away from 290. 71 is the way to go

Expect a little over 7 hours driving to downtown Austin... Depends on when you go through Houston.

Flying from BTR to Austin, you will have close to 4 hours travel time. Plus the drive to BTR airport, wait for luggage at AUS and then rental car and the. Drive to downtown... You're looking at a minimum of 6 total hours for the journey.

To me, gaining that one hour is t enough to have the flexibility of stopping at bucees... Or some other good place for lunch and not having to worry about lost luggage or delayed flights

FYI - Dallas to BTR flights are notoriously bad for delays.

Just noticed option 2... If that is a direct flight, I'd probably do that.

Austin's airport is a great airport every day except for right before and after SXSW and other music fests. If you think Austin is bad, I think you haven't flown through that airport in over 3 years.

the drive back is the most fun. exit 4 in LA has drive thru daquari and Lake Charles has a casino 2 minutes off the interstate.

Yeah it's a direct there, would probably connect in DAL at 8pm thursday night so we could finish the conference at 4:30pm and still get to BR by midnight

The drive sucks. I travel between the two cities and always fly, unless I bring my dog.

290 is a mess, so you'll take I-10 to 71 and drive right past the AUS airport, see it and wish you flew instead of drove.

I truly enjoy the drive... But I'm usually alone or with my sons. Not sure how much I'd enjoy it with 5 non-friends.

I've driven Austin before, it's not too bad of a drive.
I would fly for that cost differential though.

Any chance I fly to a destination I'll take it. Especially if you can swing your company paying for it. Plus thats a whole lot of time with co-workers

That's actually coming up as the cheapest return option on DL for Friday . I do need some mqm's so that may be an option

I've made the drive and the flight is definitely better. A few weeks ago, I connected at Hobby which was awful. The return flight was cancelled and Southwest placed me on a direct from Austin - MSY. The direct is definitely the way to go.
