i havent booked my flight yet because i cant believe how expensive they are from DFW. i fly american because im status, but every flight is $400 and up unless i want to leave at 5am.

if anyone has any tips on hotels or airfare let me know. i cant believe how expensive hotels are as well downtown. nothing under $200 a night

when do you think is the cutoff for waiting for a good flight deal? we would leave july 14th

I mean, you are picking the most popular time of the year for people to travel to that city. Go in January and rooms will be around $150/night.

It's crazy. I am going to Chicago next week. Not because that was my intended travel dates, but surprisingly, because Memorial Day week had cheaper rates than any other week I looked at during the summer.

Staying on Michigan Ave. and booked through hotels.com.

If you want to save a ton on hotels, you can stay in the suburbs, take the train into town, and then take it back out to the suburbs. It would obviously be a bit annoying, but if saving money is the #1 priority, it's not a huge hassle.

If you were to do that and you wanted something super cheap, you could book the Red Roof Inn in Northbrook for around 60 bucks a night. You're a 20 minute walk or cheap uber/cab ride away from the Lake Cook train station. Round trip train tickets are like 12 bucks each and the ride is 40-60 minutes each way depending on time of day. The hotel is in an upscale suburban area.

When my parents have out of town guests stay with them, they take the train in to the city to spend the day and don't find it to be a huge inconvenience.

I mean, if you want the best experience possible, staying downtown would obviously be preferable, but you can save a few hundred bucks with what I suggested above. Sort of a crazy idea, just throwing it out there in case.

travelodge by the loop has decent prices.

eta- Uber is your friend. ( a lot of hotels will give you an uber/lyft code)just got back from chi last weekend. took about 7 ubers and spent under $50

the L system is also easy as hell to get down.

I'm gonna need specific dates from you but I can try and help. Are there multiple baseball series up there you could see or are you set on a specific date for a cubs or whitesox game? I'm finding flights as low as $167 with not great times, decent times around $246 per person.

Lastly, are you at least gold with American? Why not just book the absolute cheapest tickets for your date and do a free same day standby? Or even the $75 same day confirmed flight change?
