As said, there's no reason to worry about exchanging money until you get there. I bring $200-500 in US cash just in case of an emergency and I usually have that in cash anyway. Like if your card doesn't work or something.
But just go to an ATM when you arrive in the airport and get money out, no reason to do it any other way.

When I did the exchange the exchange rate wasn't bad so it didn't hurt me. I do believe Chase Sapphire it me with interest charges for taking out cash through ATM's.

That is what I do

I'm taking a 10 day trip to Germany and Austria next month. I only plan on bringing around $300 USD. Use the ATMs there. You won't get bent over on the exchange fees that way and they are everywhere just like here.

Bring $200 for emergencies. Once you get there use your card to take money out of the atm in local currency. Make sure your bank doesn't rape you on charges using what ever card you have. If you plan on doing a lot of international travel open a Charles schwab investor checking account and use the provided debit card to take out money. Charles schwab refunds all atm fees worldwide.

I take it you are headed to the Bayern region, too? I'm doing Munchen, Berchtesgaden and Salzburg-leaving on the 16th. Can't wait for some cold weather for a change

I went with very little cash and had no issue at the ATM. I took 500 Euros but did not use it and put everything on my Visa Card. When I left at the Airport I exchanged it for USD. I stayed 3 weeks.

I can vouch for that. The Schwab card IMO is THE best for travel anywhere. On top of that, Schwab charges no foreign transaction fees on overseas purchases except maybe the 1% Visa fee. But when I compare rates to an app like XE currency, I see no difference.

I've been to Germany more than a dozen times and I've never had a merchant not accept my credit card in any city there. (Visa)
The only time I needed cash was for tips and the occasional taxi. Get fifty euros in 5/10 euro notes from your local bank and if you need more cash once you get there use your ATM card at any bank ATM in Germany on the Visa International network. You'll get the best exchange rate doing that.

Ok, we just got back yesterday. First of all, it was an AMAZING trip. As far as the cash situation, we brought $200 and converted it at a bank in Dusseldorf. We got hosed on the transaction fees and exchange rate. The rate you see published is only for bank to bank transactions not the normal folk. The rest of the time, we would just hit the ATM. The exchange rate and fees were much better. As for accepting credit cards, yes many did, BUT there were just as many small shops and stalls at the Christmas Markets that did not. All in all though, we spent maybe 500 euros in cash. We bought a bunch of Gluehwein and a lot of little gifts from the shops though. FYI, Cologne has a WAY better Christmas Market than Munich.

Will I not get the actual conversion of 1.35 to 1?
Ofcourse you will not get the market rate anywhere.

We were in Munchen for 4 days and did the various tours there. It was 17 degrees last week when we were in the Alps. Still no snow though. We stayed most of our time in the Nordrhein-Westfalen region. We will be doing other parts of the country next year. We will have Germany in our regular vacation rotation from now on. We fell in love with the Augustiner Klosterwirt and will be visiting Munchen quite often just for that reason. We really enjoyed the Augustiner Edelstoff and the Dunkel beers. The service staff was second to none as well. I hope you enjoy your trip as much as we did ours! Prost!
