How much cash does everyone take on a trip to Germany? I was told that there still are quite a few shops in smaller German towns that don't take credit/debit cards. We will be hitting up some Christmas markets and such and I am wondering how much cash is a good amount to bring, and exchange, for a 10 day trip. Suggestions would be much obliged.

But seriously impossible question. How much do you plan on spending?

I usually bring 300-500 dollar equivalency in local currency. If I need more there are ATMs. I'm sure some ballers bring more.

I brought 500, I have a Chase Platinum card but I found a lot of non-touristy places I went didn't take cards. Most of the cash I spent was spent at pubs and small shops.

ATMS are usually accessible and exchange rates are better at them. Maybe someone here can confirm that. I usually just being a couple hundred worth to get me by until I'm settled in.

We were thinking of about $500. Would it be better to exchange the cash to Euros at our local bank today or wait till we get into Germany this weekend?

eta: never mind. It looks like you get a better rate once "in country"

I have a Chase Platinum and an Amex but we plan on buying most of our stuff at local markets. What kind of fees can we expect at ATM's over there?

I thought the general consensus was to use ATMs once there now?

I haven't brought cash and exchanged here or there in a long time.

Don't bring more than $10k through customs. This is my only advice.

Good advice. We will scale back our budget below $10k then.

How long are you there for? I think I took $1,000 for about ten days in Germany with a side trip to Prague and a Citibank card that will work anywhere...didn't spend it all.

10 days. I think we will bump it up to $700. We will have our credit cards as well.

I feel like a broken recored with how many times I've said this but...Open a Schwab Checking account and bring zero cash.

It is free, there are no foreign transaction fees, and fee free ATMs world wide.

It's worked for me in Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Cambodia. If the ATM charges you a fee they will credit it back to your account.

You will get raped if you try to do a currency exchange.

Capital One Cards have no Foreign Transaction fee on them.

ATMs in Germany are prevalent.

Sparkasse (Bank) is who I've always dealt with there without any issues.

Make sure any Credit/Debit card you want to use there has a Chip in it, otherwise it won't work there.

AMEX is not used as much there compared to Visa or MasterCard.

I'm going to Canada in late winter. Will I get raped at Chase trying to convert $1,000 US into CAD?

Will I not get the actual conversion of 1.35 to 1?

When I travel to any country I take about $200 US, bring small bills if going to countries with an insane exchange rate or where things are cheap, they often will not make change, I also exchange $200 from my local bank into the local currency. Once there I use my CC or an ATM to get local currency.

Just use an ATM once you get in country. You get better exchange rates and it's easier. Last time e I converted us dollars to local currency was 1990.

The only place I've ever had trouble getting cash from an ATM was Argentina, but everyone wanted dollars so badly that you could trade for pesos basically everywhere including just on the street corner because the official government exchange rate is complete artificial BS
