Man, reading this thread makes me realize how awesome the West is compared to the the south and east
If you make it up to Montana holler at me. It’s a bit out of the way compared to the suggestions you’ve been given but you can decide on what is important on your trip. Nature, culture, scenery, nightlife etc

New Orleans, Grand Canyon, Vegas, Los Angeles are obvious.
Some good stops along the way, though, would be:
Scott, LA for some boudin
Austin, TX for some BBQ and live music
San Antonio, TX for the River Walk
Phoenix to bang sluts at Arizona State
Once you make it to California, you could drive the Coast Road up to San Francisco, visit Sequoia, or even go all the way up from San Francisco to Portland, OR and Seattle, WA and end your trip up there.
Obviously, eventually, you'll have to come back to the states to get a tour of the northeast, hitting up DC, Philly, NYC, Boston, and Maine. Or maybe a midwest trip to see Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Nashville, and Memphis.

With your time frame, I think doing more in California would be a no brainer. If you can’t rent a car, there are a few companies that do tours of the coast and Yosemite. This way you could see San fransisco (top 3 city IMO for someone to see in the US who is not from here), hit an amazing national park and do the California coast on your way back to LA.
This way you will get the beach in Miami, the culture in New Orleans, and see a lot of the different scenery that The west coast has to offer.
If you decide to do a Texas City, Austin is your best bet and you can take a $12 megabus from New Orleans to Austin.
If staying in hostels, stay at The Atlas House in New Orleans for personalized pub crawls and then the Green Tortoiuse in SF.

How many more times does "renting a car and driving is NOT an option" need to be posted?

If you are going the airbnb route let us know beforehand where you book a place at in New Orleans. There are some tempting places near the French Quarter for pretty cheap that are in not so desirable neighborhoods. That being said try to stay in the French Quarter, Warehouse Dist, Garden District or Uptown. These areas are walking distance from the sites or streetcar path.

Thanks guys. I am taking all suggestions under consideration. I will probably decide on my final itenerary next month after checking flights, hotels etc. Unfortunately price has to play a part.
About New Orleans. I stayed at the French Market Inn last time and liked it so will probably book there again.

I'll make a pitch, again, for skipping southern Cali for the San Francisco Bay area. SoCal is the land of the car--you pretty much need one to get around to key sights....whereas the Bay Area is so much more easily visited/toured via public transit. Better food in the Bay area, too.
In New Orleans, consider taking a swamp tour; they may seem touristy/hokey to locals, but the cypress swamp is an interesting place to visit....alligators, etc.

What game are you going? If it's the Georgia game I'd love to have a beer and hear of your experiences.

I am definitely visiting San Francisco, always a place I have wanted to go. My flight back home is from Los Angeles(non refundable) and I have already bought a ticket to the WWE Survivor Series at the Staples Center. I was planning 4 or 5 nights for Los Angeles but as time goes on I am more interested in other Cities to visit. Everything seems so spread out. I am thinking of just doing 1 or 2 nights to watch the Survivor Series, see a bit of Hollywood(I realise there are nicer parts but as a tourist it would be good to see) and catch my flight home.
I done a swamp tour on my visit last September which was cool. I would like to do something to do with Voodoo this time round.

@tween
If you are on about which LSU game then it will be Alabama on November 03. I know it is a big game and tickets will be expensive.

Would Dallas be the choice for Texas then?
Nope. Austin imo.

Dallas has the best rail. Austin is a great town to visit, but has poor transportation infrastructure. Austin has also kicked out Uber/Lyft, so you're stuck with taxis which are more expensive.
For what you're needing transportation-wise, D/FW is your best bet in TX.

Glad to see Austin repented of its stupidity.

Actually, the Republicans decided local control isn't such a good idea and stripped all cities ability to regulate Uber, lyft or taxis. Austin only wanted Uber and Lyft to provide driver finger prints and undergo a background check but Uber and Lyft refused. State republicans stepped in to put a stop to this injustice. Interesting side note is the state Republicans require me to be finger printed and undergo a background check for my state liscense even though I don't deal with the general public.

Thanks for everybody who took the time to reply but I think I will have a change of plan and spend most of my time in Canada.
The way I have been treated and the xenophobia I have faced on other parts of this forum have put me off visiting America and especially the south.
My flights are non refundable so will have to fly to Miami and back from Los Angeles but will only spend one or two days in these places.
I don’t know if it is the trump effect over there but I have been shocked at the abuse I have received. Not what I imagined when I hear the phrase ‘southern hospitality’.
Have a good day.

Some of it is. He's emboldened a lot of people to not hide their true feelings.
Sorry for your experience. Safe travels.

Passing judgement on a large region of a country based on posters on an internet message board? You sound a bit weak-minded and ignorant yourself.
Have a nice time in Canada.

For what it's worth, too many people say things on the internet they'd never say in real life.
It's one of the worst aspects of the internet. It gives consequence free voice to the ugliness inside. I doubt that's unique to a region or country, unfortunately.
Regardless of where you travel, I hope you enjoy yourself.
