What's the likelihood of you buying refurbished electronics?

Both of the TVs in my house are refurbished. One is a Vizio and the other is a Sony. I'm not sure how refurbishing works.

As I understand it the refurbishing can be done by different parties. Like Sony can refurbish their own products or sometimes there are third party refurbishers.

Anybody care to explain how this works?

Anyway, I've gotten excellent products for nearly 50% off a lot of the time. How likely are you to buy refurbished products and does it depend on the brand or who is doing the refurbishing?

I guess it depends on the electronics and where it's going. If it is a video card for my data server then I wouldn't mind refurbished, or if it's an Xbox for the guest room; however, for things like in my living room or my main computer, then I'll likely purchase only new products.

I always see the customer ratings for refurbed products include the guys that say shite like "I opened the box and there was a crack on the screen" then they give the 40" Sony Bravia TV a one star rating

And I wish I can reply and say "dude, please rate the product on its merits and not give an obviously superior product a 1 star rating because the delivery guy dropped your fricking box".

I haven't bought many refurbs. But I buy the shite out of open box items at Best Buy. Last month I got an open box-excellent Sonos Play1 for $114.

Haaaate this. Or the people that review a product that hasn't released yet: "Can't wait for this, it's going to be great. 5 stars!!!" You can't possibly know, moron.

And the people that rate something based off something the product wasn't meant for: "It's an all-around good computer, but it doesn't make my wife put out more. 1 star."

I could go on for days

I've bought refurbished cameras and lenses directly from Canon and have never had a problem. If I buy refurb I prefer to buy directly from the manufacturer.

For an actual refurb, I'd only buy if it was manufacturer refurbished.

I have no problem buying open box items from a respectable source like Best Buy or amazon.

In regards to electronics, I prefer open box or refurbished.

I worked for a third party refurbisher during college. I can tell you that usually the stuff is good but it does have visible wear on it 90% of the time. A lot of times you can get polished shite too.

But buying, I really don't see a lot of difference anyway. It's like those how your food is made documentaries. You don't really want to know what happened underneath the cover.

The way I see it, I can buy something new that has a chance of having a defect for full price, or I can buy something that had a defect, the defect was fixed, and hope that it doesn't have a 2nd defect that wasn't detected for a discounted price. I'll take my chance with a refurb for the discounted price, as long as the discount is worth the reduced warranty.

Talked with one of the Canon engineers last year. He said refurbished are better than new because the cameras are completely taken apart, inspected, rebuilt by hand and tested by three different quality control managers before being repackaged for resale. He said if a refurbished has problems it's noted on the records of the staff that performed the QC checks. Too many, or if a pattern develops, and that person will be reassigned or terminated. Good to know. Canon usually has some great refurbished deals.

i buy refurb/amazon warehouse deals all the time.

if i buy a manuf refurb, i genernally do it from someone's customer service i trust (like vizio who has AMAZING customer service even if the products sometimes miss the mark) or walmart.

just bought a refurb sharp microwave for $75 from walmart.com that retails for $200.

its been flawless. i mean, its a microwave, not much goes wrong that unless it starts to not heat up food anymore.

Highly likely I would buy something refurbished. I've had good luck buying used items off of trading sites, like iPhones, car stereo parts, etc. And that stuff has just been used by the average person. If something has actually been taken apart and fixed, I'd have no issue buying it from a reputable store.

Exactly how I see it. Seems like they go through a pretty intense checklist, during the refurbishing process.

But, the discount is the only reason to do this.

Zero. 90% of my electronics break, no matter the quality. I'd rather have a warranty
