I am not sure what you are looking for since you mention the boys are home by themselves. But if you are looking for a home VOIP phone system, buy an Oooma.

Ooma is a cheap, but decent, option. The device costs $130, but then it's less than $5/month (which is all taxes, no service fees) if you stick to the basic plan.

A few months ago someone posted a deal here on the tech board and I got the device for < $80 at NewEgg, so shop around for bargains...

I use Ooma as well. I have had it for about 2 years and it is good service. One thing to be careful buying Ooma at a special price is they may say the special included 6 months of premier service, but that is only around $12.

I know this is a tech board but just to remind that if internet service goes out Ooma is out as well. If you only use cell phone service, think about adding a simple cell phone to your account to use as a home phone.

Super stoked with my Ooma - almost 2 years now. I even pay for premier, which is less than $10 a month.

in situations where i need to call them, remind them to be doing their homework and such. they're 8 and 10. they've got ipads so i can facetime if i've got mine with me, but there are times i don't and it would be nice to just call them.

I actually used Magic Jack Plus for years with no problems. Less than $40 for the device on amazon, and like $2 a month when I had it (paid by the year). Seems cheaper than Ooma.

I'm distrustful of all-in-one solutions like Ooma and Magic Jack. There's a big universe of VoIP providers out there that can use equipment from many companies. Shop the providers for the features you want and then shop for the hardware. I use CallCentric with an Obi-Hai single line gateway.

Love my Ooma also. It came with the Bluetooth adapter for less than $100. Pay a little over $4 per month.

I use magic jack for my fax line. Years ago when I got it it was the cheapest fax line option. I have a phone hooked to it too. I pay $30 a year, and I think $35-40 for the device.

You just buy any phone and plug it in one end and the other end to your router.
Super simple.

Just a heads up to people new to the VOIP world, you can feed the signal to your whole house using existing wiring. The phone signal is a regular electrical current that will run the path of least resistance. It is recommended to disconnect the wire leading into your house. After that, you can plug the cable from any VOIP system into any phone jack to feed your whole house. Find the nearest phone jack to your router and plug a splitter into it. You can plug the feed from your VOIP device into the splitter and a regular phone into it and you are all set.

True that but if most people are like me they haven't used a wired handset in years.

U-verse phone and Cox phone service are nothing more than VoIP but they're both overpriced and sorely lacking in features compared to competitive services.

True, but how many people have installed these themselves? If I hadn't asked a bunch of questions when I had Cox phone service set up many years ago, then I wouldn't know that they cut the BellSouth feed from the house. It helped to have that knowledge when I switched to Vonage after the Cox promo period.

I have this hooked up to a cordless for a backup. No 911 service, but using a Google voice number there is no fees

Ooma with bluetooth adapter $85 free ship

From specs:

Thanks to the included Ooma Bluetooth adapter, you can merge your mobile phone and home phone together. Simply plug the Bluetooth adapter into the USB port on your Ooma Telo, linksync your mobile phone, and you're good to go. Now you can enjoy the convenience of answering your mobile phone calls on any phone in your home.

Been using ooma for about 4 years. Got the old system that grandfathered in so I pay $0 per month. No problems at all.
