Looking to get my wife a new laptop next month and strongly considering making the switch from windows to the 2015 version of apple macbook pro 13" w/ retina display. Checked them out at bestbuy today and they have them cheaper than anybody i can find online right now. Besides the geeksquad salesman telling me how great they are wanted to see what you guys think of them. Or are there better options out there? It has been a few years years since have a bought a laptop. Going to be used for general purpose browsing and also small business work.

A lot of money for a general use laptop, and they are good machines, but those two aforementioned attributes are unrelated.

What apps do you use in small business?

My wife had to have a friggin mac because well she's a wife and all the other wifes were getting them and that's what she had to have. Then Quickbooks for Mac turned out to be a completely different UX than she was used to and now I do the damned books.

Trust me, you are much better off without her snooping through your books.

I'm on one right now

Clean, easy to use UI, you really don't have to worry about viruses (relatively speaking), battery life is ok..overall I'm happy with my purchase

I got an air last year. Love it.

I got it for:
-battery life
-fast boot
-wakes up immediately from sleep by opening lid
-light
-tiny
-doesn't windows update 10x a day forcing me to reboot

I have 3 year old 15" retina mbp and it is in the same shape it was when I bought it. Still just as fast too. You can't say that about many computers out there.

I pay the apple premium for the build quality, among other things. Not to mention, it's not as overpriced as some people think. For $2500 you can get a:

15" retina screen
512 GB SSD
2.5 GHz i7 processor
16 GB RAM
2 GB AMD Video Card + Integrated Graphic
Unibody construction.

Not that bad IMO.

Plus I like having windows partition for mobile work and the OSX side for personal use.

I'd look at the macbook if it's just going to be general use

Or the air which I prefer because of the ports.

I have the 2014 MBP with 16GB RAM and Retina screen. I love it. I wish the battery life on it lasted a little longer, but I run Photoshop and Lightroom at the same time working with 1GB files regularly. Even then, it still gets 3+ hours. Charges fast, though. The screen is amazing and I got mine a few months ago from Apple refurbished store for under $1200.

For day-to-day and general use, I would think the Air would be a better, more cost effective option.

My wife wants one as well, why do women love these things?

Does it make her facebook, instagram, blog reading, and baby clothes buying experience more enjoyable?

I have no idea why someone would buy that when you can buy a comparable Windows machine for almost half the price.

My father bought one in 2007 or 2008. The screen went out last year. He called Apple and told them he'd just gone and gotten a flat-screen monitor and was using it as a desktop. They ran some diagnostics on it and the tech on the phone was flabbergasted at my Dad's setup.

He said other than the screen there were no issues. Said that Apple actually considered it a, "Legacy Device," and that it's no longer supported. My Dad blew up every PC we had at home. HP's, Compaq's, etc growing up. I know he thinks he's an IT expert and is always changing stuff.

So for him to go 7 or 8 years with a frickin' laptop and not be able to blow it up is impressive...

I love mine but I've had my battery die on both my macs and my wireless card die on one.

I've told myself that if I get another laptop when this dies I'll just get a chromebook for the same price as this laptops battery

But we'll see.

Man I love Chromebooks. Our entire public school system has become a Google School. It's freaking awesome for my children to be able to come home, log in to their chromebook, and instantly have access (and be pre-logged in) to the GAFE (Google Apps for Education) ecosystem.

They're also awesome in classrooms, as they don't have to load up Windows User Profiles, which is an awful resource drain in public schools where tons of different kids are logging on to different computers throughout the day. Laptops on carts would sometimes take as long as 10 minutes to load up Windows and hit the Network once a kid logged in.

Tell that to the poor owner of the macbook pro currently sitting on my desk getting OS X reinstalled. No data loss as I was able to recover his files.

Apple Owners need to understand that their shite can break as often as PCs.

Before going from PC to Mac, I would discuss with your wife the varying differences in the OS. Some ppl are hesitant when it comes to learning "new technology"

MBP is certainly worth it if you're not put off by the price.
