Cisco Certification Question
Posted on 4/5/15 at 6:55 pm

I am looking for input from anyone who wants to give it.
I currently hold a CCNA in Routing and Switching, but I want to start the process of adding to my Cisco skills and certifications.
Should I get my CCNA Security and then get the CCNP in security or should I get my CCNP in routing and switching? I would love to hear from anyone who has been in this situation or has both/one.

I am in the same boat (have my CCNA in R&S) and not sure which path to go down next from Cisco.
Thinking I might look at the Juniper certification next, since we have actually been deploying more from them lately.
If I were to keep on the Cisco track though, I would probably go Security next, then CCNP.

I am leaning toward the security route but I just dont know. The tests and materials are expensive and of course I want the best ROI for these certs.

I look at it like this... With hacking and all of the crap getting leaked to the Internet, I would put my chips on the security side.

Focus on NP first. Security is nice but if you want ROI, NP puts you at another level.

May wanna check your facts. Coworker holds a ccnp, got out of networking for infosec. I'd put network architecture and security architecture on the same level but probably give infosec the edge

The security exam is only 55-65 multiple choice questions. No sims and it probably less than $200. You can knock that out in like 2 weeks. I'd assume the CCNP would take much longer so I'd knock out the security bit first.

Get your employer to pay for it

I'm a CCNA in R&S and I've begun studying for CCNP in R&S.
Your route entirely depends on what you want to do. I work for an ISP, and I intend to keep it that way so I want to stay on the R&S path, and hopefully get my employer to send me to the service provider class to get that as well.
If it was me, I'd go with CCNP R&S and then move to a more specific cert like Security.

any employer worth their salt will. Mine is going to be paying for the online courses that Cisco offers, as well as buy the CiscoPress books. Then it's up to me to pay for the test but if I pass they reimburse me.
I've also gotten a free voucher for the Juniper CCNA equivalent, JNCIA, thanks to our sales rep. I'll be getting that shortly as well.

I don't need to check my facts. CCNP R&S is the building block for all other certs. Get that and the others come easy.
When I said ROI is at another level I wasn't referring to $$.

I think the NP route is what I am going to do. The consensus in this thread and cisco forums is NP is the best path. I am going to ROUTE done and then study SWITCH and CCNA Security at the same time. Apparently there is a good bit of overlap between them.

This is why CCNP R&S is the foundation.

CCNA Wireless would be my suggestion. If you want to focus on security get your CISSP

Route I took was CCNA -> CCNA Wireless -> CCNP -> CCNP Wireless.
This worked well for me because I do a fair amount of wireless work and it provided a lot of instant, real world, usability.
That said, I believe the CCNA Security is a great certificate. You'll need a LOT less time invested to get the CCNA Security than you will for the CCNP. Also, if you get CCNA Security now, it will renew your CCNA and when you get pass your CCNP test later they will re-new your CCNA and your CCNA Security.

I went CCNA R&S then CCNP R&S. I am currently on pause at the moment because I took an offer outside of networking that is more of a hybrid role and pays handsomely.
I will say that I am happy I went CCNP R&S. I feel I am very well prepared for any other CCNA track I choose. The CCNP R&S is night and day depth-wise compared to CCNA R&S. Also, if I find myself in the job market again soon, the CCNP R&S will give me a leg up and my foot in the door easier. I noticed a huge uptick in job interest when I added my CCNP. The CCNA is a great cert, but a lot of people get it and stop or branch out. CCNP is highly regarded by knowledgeable employers.

Just curious what are the average salaries for CCNA's and CCNP's?
