My parents loaded up their house with TVs like these last black Friday. They still work very well and have had no problems

Roku is releasing a Roku SE $49 streaming box that will be a $25 Black Friday only special. This is basically a rebranded Roku 1, so it certainly won't be fast, but at $25 it might be a worthwhile purchase for secondary TVs. LINK /

I've purchased a number of large, cheap TVs for various things and they almost always exceed my expectations. While I'm not going to fault people for buying higher end TVs, it's an area I'll go fairly cheap on and I've never really noticed the deficiency much.

Maybe dumpster fire is the wrong technical terminology. I don't question their functional reliability. I'm just thinking in terms of "there's more to panel quality than backlighting and resolution" and taking their size under consideration as well -- the fact that the rooms where I'd want a TV that large are the rooms in which I watch TV the most. I'd get one as an outdoor throwaway TV if I had the setup for one. I have a couple of ~30"-32" TVs in my house that are certainly way worse than these. I have a 2007-era Emerson 720p 60Hz CCFL-backlit, still going strong after 8 years.

I have an old Toahiba rear projection I'm ready to replace (don't laugh to hard). The room where the TV will go has a lot of glare. This will be my main TV in the house. Will be used for TV/movies and sports, no gaming. The max length for the TV is 49 inches long (actual length not the screen diagonal). I'm pretty sure I don't want a curved TV. Smart TV dosent seem like a big deal either, but I'm ok if it has it. Any recommendations in general or of the Black Friday deals? Should I make a separate thread?

49" Wide is about what most 55" Models measure. SOme may be a tad more.Check TV specs to be sure it will meet your needs.

Any recommendations on particular TVs? What to look for. I've heard some types have issues with lots of glare. Is 120 sufficient or is 240 a must?

Just saw this online

One of the Best Buy’s eight new deals is the 48-inch Samsung 1080p LED Smart HDTV for only $379.99 (save $220)

You said maximum was around 49"? Samsung usually puts out some pretty quality sets in terms of image crispness and vibrant color. I have a 55 inch one at home that I got 3 years ago and it still looks as good as some of the new ones out today.

cheap TVs make the best bedroom and kids room TVs. I have a 32" Emerson from 2008 in my room. I paid like $420 for (it's probably $120 now) it works great, good 720p picture, and I use it daily.

Downstairs. I'm about to be on my third "higher end" TV in as many years. Though the last one died because it had a fly on the screen and got hit a little too hard.

They're probably all good deals for what you get. TVs are Black Friday's bread and butter.

Thinking about it but it looks like it's not a smart tv.

Nah, it's going to be the most stripped-down version of any TV offered by that brand. But you can make a TV "smart" for the price of a Fire TV stick, Chromecast, or Roku stick, and it'll work better.
