ATT just launched their gigabit service in my neighborhood. I'm currently paying charter $73 a month for 50 mb and home phone, and ATT has an offer for $70 per month for 1000mb speed without the phone service, which I am fine with dropping as I never use it.

Has anyone tried it out yet? Are the speeds as fast as advertised, and is their router good enough to cover the entire house, or will I need to get some type of range extender?

I have it in Katy, TX. It's awesome here. My subdivision is only 2 years old, so they laid fiber in it when it was built. I haven't had any problems. I'm getting about 940 down and 910 up when I'm hardwired.

With Comcast, I'm still on their 200 Mbps plan. I plan on dropping them next month. I get 240 down and 12 up with them.

I live in a 2 story house. AT&T put the Pace 5268AC gateway in my master bedroom closet on the 2nd floor. The WiFi signal spreads throughout the entire house. I even see my neighbor's WiFi when I'm on the 2nd floor.

ATT laid fiber along the main drag outside my brother's subdivision. He is closer to the VRAD (node) in his subdivision, so he's getting about 950 down and 925 up the last time I checked it. They haven't had any problems either. He has had it about a month longer than I have.

Incredible. Huntsville is getting google fiber so hopefully I'll get to try it out sooner rather than later.

It's wild. When I was living in Thailand, upload and download speeds of 500 were the norm. I couldn't believe it.

Google Fiber takes forever for them to install so don't hold your breath too long.

After having AT&T 1G Internet installed, I was only getting 94 MBPS. They checked it out and told me my computer was at fault. I checked the computer specs and sure enough, the network card that came installed in the 5 year old HP pavilion could only handle up to 150 MBPS max. So if you have an older computer you won't get anywhere near 1G. I changed my plan to 100 MBPS and still get the same 94 MBPS.

I wish more people would realize this. We constantly go on service calls with people complaining about slow browsing speeds. Many times the customer's equipment is too blame because some people are clinging to PC's that belong in museums.

Other times they have a loop length that only allows them a certain speed. I get laughs out of the customer's that demand we move vrad's closer to them. They have no idea how things work or how ridiculous they sound.

Lately I've been doing fiber installs and the customer is only getting our 6mb internet plan. Those installs are beyond overkill, however in areas that were previously fed by the central offices it at least makes sense. For some customers 6mb was never available due to loop length restrictions so to them it could be an upgrade plus they were probably bundled w/DirecTV.

The only thing I have been told is that we will start installing aerial fiber this year. There is some insane number of footage for fiber that at&t wants to have placed this year. Up until now pretty much everything in this area has been placed where there are buried front yard easements which limits the deployment. With aerial fiber we will be able to connect many more people. As with the buried easements you can just about bet that front yard areas will be deployed before backyards due to accessibility which will allow more fiber to be placed quickly.

what's a good way to check this? thinking about getting ATT Fiber, as it's just about the same as what Comcast is charging me for 100 or so MB download. I've got a late 2013 Macbook pro, with an Asus dual band router, and Arris Surfboard modem.

Our current gateways, the Pace 5268 and Arris Nvg599, are both dual band modem/router combos. They give by far the best performance. If you are using a device that is dual band compatible you should see speeds in line with what you are paying for. Older devices will only be using the 2.4ghz frequency and will be more susceptible to interference from your neighbors wifi routers than one using the 5ghz frequency would be. You must also take into account environmental factors such as distance, walls and what they are made of (brick, wood, metal), and microwaves.

The last thing to take into account is the amount of simultaneous users and what they are doing. You wouldn't believe how many people try to watch Netflix while their kids are watching YouTube videos and surfing the internet and then complain that the internet was slow. They are usually trying to do this on a 3-6mb connection via wifi sometimes on opposite sides of the house from where the gateway is.

I've got it here in KC...the area I live in doesn't allow google fiber

It has been pretty good. Only issue I had was getting my computer hooked up on main line instead of wireless so it could get faster speeds. Guy came out and worked on it and was able to put a jack in electrical outlet so it would work.

Here are my current speeds, actually a little slower than normal on download.

I've read that the ATT router/modem combo causes complications with Apple devices, any truth to that?

Yeah, it seems the way IPv6 is implemented in our gateways causes issues for some. See this possible fix. I cannot confirm it works because I do not have U-verse ;-), nor do I have any personal iOS devices.

Charlottesville, VA has Ting Fiber, which has 1GB connections.

Sadly, I live on the other side of the mountain, no fiber. Best I can get is Comcast at 200 MB. Hopefully Ting will be able to expand their fiber network to where I live.
