Now if you're a true masochist at heart, you could choose to root for a middle table club. This means you will bitch and moan because the owner prefers to make a profit instead of pumping money into the club to get over the hump and qualify for Europe. Every offseason you will also be able to enjoy watching your homegrown talent move to a top 5 club. There's no joy to be found in rooting for one of these teams. You don't even get the elation by avoiding relegation like the bottom half of the table teams. There's nothing for you but mediocrity and misery.
Going to disagree here. Watching Swansea have a record season and finish 8th this past year knowing where they were a little more than a decade ago was a blast. Doing the double over both ManU and Arsenal? Sign me up. And the club turns a profit and is run the right way and is taking that money and investing in infrastructure to be here for the long haul.

Don't pick a team. Just watch games and you'll grow to love someone. If it's Chelsea/United/City/Arsenal then great. If it's a smaller club, that's great too.

Meh, obviously we knew we were going to win the title so the boys enjoyed themselves NYE. We could afford to throw that one away.

This really isn't a bad comparison, except the Yankees have won shite in five years.
I just threw the Yankees in there as an example. My point would have been made with any American team. It's odd for a team to win 2 titles in 3 years and still get made fun of for not winning enough with their money.

Oh I agree, I honestly thought that was a pretty good comparison to an American franchise. Not really many franchises you can compare City to, but I think the NYY are one of the few. I never thought of it that way.

Will you be okay with finishing 8th next season? What about if you finish 12th? What about finishing no better than 8th for the next 10 seasons? Swansea had a record season and still sold off the best player in the January transfer window. There's a glass ceiling and when you've been there for a while staring up, it eventually starts eating at your soul.

Arsenal are the hipster choices so you get to support a big club and live in fake torment about how close you are and claim your aren't really a bandwagon fan because you never really win anything.

Heh guys I'm diving headfirst into EPL this year and am looking forward to following soccer for the first time in my life
Welcome!
I was in the same boat as you. I followed the advice of many on here and watched as a neutral for a while before picking a club. I really enjoyed doing that as I got to learn a lot about various aspects of the EPL without a bias. This approach is certainly great advice.
As the seasons went along I found myself liking certain styles of play with the least favorite being boring boring Chelsea. One of the more exciting styles I found was Tottenham with their high press and aggressive push forward on the attack and their young exciting players.
I also didn't want to choose a Yankee type team either so that ruled out ManU, City, Arsenal. Also didn't want to choose a team that would face relegation as I didn't want to invest my Saturday and Sunday mornings only to have them wasted.
BTW the people talking bad about Tottenham are obviously fans of teams besides Tottenham who will stop at nothing to degrade them at every turn. Facts are Tottenham finished 5th in the table last year and beat the league champions handily.
Finally I took several of the Which English Premier League team should I support quizes online and pretty much every one came back with Tottenham number 1 or 2.
Plus there is a great group of Tottenham supporters on this board to discuss the matches and team goings on. Tottenham Season Long thread
Oh and I would be remiss if I didn't mention the construction of the best stadium in the league that will host the London NFL games for the next 10 years.
Happy Hunting!

Just watch the games for a few months. Your team will pick you. I fell in love with the Foxes on the run in last year. Gearing up for another relegation battle with the Tinkerman now in charge. It's not like you have to have a team in the Champions league to enjoy the Champions League.

As an Arsenal fan, I know I don't have much room to talk, but bragging about finishing 5th just seems so lame. Reminded me of this:

Meh. Without a salary cap, teams have different goals. 5th for Spurs is not bad, considering how the four teams above us can basically buy whoever they frick they want.

Exactly. Villa just hopes to stay in Premier league and we are happy.
