I would like to point to the multiple years where Arsenal had to sell their best players and y'all still failed to finish above Arsenal...

Exactly. Villa just hopes to stay in Premier league and we are happy.

Villa underachieves big time, IMO. If I were a billionaire, they would be my #1 target in the EPL.

frick staring, I'd be happy just to be able to look up at it.

I will say this to the OP. Having a team avoid relegation is a completely different feeling and rooting interest than anything else you've likely experienced. I'm sure it feels awesome to have your team win the league and play champions league football, but watching them avoid relegation and having the fear of essentially losing the awesome access we have here on NBC is intense as hell. When it is achieved (often too close for comfort) the relief you feel is a pretty unique experience. Fear is pretty exciting driving emotion to feel (at least for me) while watching "important" matches for your club. It's kind of an adrenaline rush.

I watched for years before I settled on Arsenal. I'm glad I had no idea they were supported so well in the US, and that they were considered the "hipster" choice, because I was able to choose them solely on the club and the style of play.

Just watch the matches. If I were a newcomer and didn't want to "go with the flow" I would be attracted to teams like Swansea and Southampton. They're always fun to watch. I've always liked Everton as well.

I've seen more hipsters in Chelsea gear lately than any other team, anyway.

Meh. Without a salary cap, teams have different goals. 5th for Spurs is not bad, considering how the four teams above us can basically buy whoever they frick they want.

Spurs have one of the richest owners you can get. He's just a cheap frick

That's not my fault that the owner hasn't made my club into a multi multi million dollar toy.

i picked leeds 15 years ago because they were the exciting young team that was somewhat overachieving and playing an exciting style. worst decision

everton also appealed to me and has been a close second to leeds in england because i liked certain players (rooney, lee carsley, gravesen, david weir, big dunc) and moyesy the GOAT.

other teams i would consider right now if i were in OP's shoes: arsenal(used to hate wenger but i love the guy now), southampton, stoke (let's face it the stokadelphia days are gone and they are somewhat likeable) crystal palace and swansea (they remind me of everton about 10-12 years ago, monk reminds me of moyes)

I'm with you, from just watching a ton of matches over the last few years I'd likely go southampton, palace, or Swansea. I love the way southampton operate as a smaller club without big boy resources, and Swansea are almost always very enjoyable to watch. The atmosphere at palace home matches comes across as incredible and they are the team that I'd probably rank as my distant second behind Sunderland.

Well I wish you were a billionaire... We've been looking for new ownership for a couple years now. Large following and good history. Solid stadium 40k+... Just won't pay for players.

So, wait, you'd rather a rich owner just throw his personal money at the team to buy players rather than running the team as a profitable business within its own means?

swansea has been fun to watch going back a few years when roberto martinez was there, then with rodgers, laudrup and now monk. southampton are basically how leeds should have been run when they had to hit the reset button. palace has these ladies:

I don't want to go all OT snob here, but that pic is the definition of cheerleader effect. There are some lookers in there, but if you take each one individually, you start to notice some things.

As an Arsenal fan, I know I don't have much room to talk, but bragging about finishing 5th just seems so lame. Reminded me of this:

It's not a brag about a fantastic finish necessarily but a point about Tottenham generally being in a position to compete. As opposed to battling relegation every season.

Will you be okay with finishing 8th next season? What about if you finish 12th? What about finishing no better than 8th for the next 10 seasons? Swansea had a record season and still sold off the best player in the January transfer window. Not going to become a force overnight unless you have a middle eastern take over. Have to build organically and make sure you don't over extend your means and end up right back where you started. A club like this is currently playing catch up in everything down to the academy and facilities. It can take a really long time but you have to do it the right way. And during that time there is no reason you can't bring home a cup trophy or make the odd run in Europe from time to time.
