Sources tell FOX Soccer that Clint Dempsey will sign with the Seattle Sounders.

I am very surprised that Portland agreed to the trade. Obviously the Comissioner's Office has a lot of central power but they are basically allowing their arch rival to get the most dominant player in the league.

And there is a very valid reason for fans to be disappointed. This is the equivalent of a star player returning to Hadjuk Split, Partizan, or Anderlecht in his prime except the location is even more out of sight, out of mind. Clint has basically chosen to end his career abroad.

Why? I have no idea. Everton would have been a much better choice.

According to what I've seen, Seattle was the only team to meet Spurs' $9M asking price. Might be wrong.

Hmmm.... That explains why Tottenham dealt him but if I was Clint, I would have vetoed any move to the MLS. They would have sold him for a little less. However I cannot believe no one offered 6 million pounds for Dempsey in all of England, or desirable teams in other leagues.

Since he will be signed as a DP, I don't think the allocation order matters.

ETA: I think that is what you are talking about?

also....

If he doesn't agree to a contract with Seattle, he wouldn't be transferred and would stay at Tottenham.

This is what I'm most surprised about. But e just have wanted to come to the MLS.

On a separate note, doesn't ESPN FC premier this weekend? Good timing for them as this will be a hot topic.

Yeah I'm not sure I got the allocation rule right.

As for your edit, I just meant Clint should have vetoed it. I think he wanted to come back. I would like to hear his explanation.

Numbers being thrown around is 4 yrs $32 and a $9 Transfer fee.

An American will be the highest paid player in MLS...there is so much win in this for the league.

Not sure what you are getting at here. What difference does any of that make?

Yeah, this is pretty cool. And I guess compared to his situation at Spurs, I prefer this. Plus as an Arsenal fan I can go back to rooting for him.

That said, I'm shocked that MLS paid 9 mil for an aging player, but this is probably the best DP move since Beckham.

I don't necessarily think its a bad move for Clint, but there is certainly more risk in this than in moving to another EPL club.

However, I think the main thing I'm feeling is disappointment that a guy that just proved this past season that he's capable of playing at the top of the top level is essentially packing it up for absolutely no reason that we're aware of yet. There was a pride as an American soccer fan that Clint had made it where he did.

An American is about to be the highest paid player in a First Division league...how would that not be a source or pride. Hard to imagine that has ever happened before.

Christ, people sound like the guy died.

This isn't MLS of 1996, or of 2005. The level of play is very good, in some instances.

Look at the MLS All-Star starters:

quote:

Raul Fernandez; Tony Beltran, Aurelien Collin, Matt Besler, Corey Ashe; Will Johnson, Kyle Beckerman, Graham Zusi, Brad Davis; Marco Di Vaio, Thierry Henry

Which guys definitely COULDN'T be at least part time players in the EPL? Brad Davis, Corey Ashe, Kyle Beckerman, maybe Tony Beltran? And before you say Will Johnson, I assure you he could play for a low table team.

How big (really) is the gap between Nick Rimando and Guzan and Howard?

Look at a guy that just moved from MLS to the EPL, Roger Espinoza. Does he look lost? Overmatched? No, not really. Kinda looks like the same guy.

Then look at Seattle's (where Dempsey is headed) two central midfielders, Ozzie Alonso and Shalrie Joseph. Is Espinoza heads and tails better than those two? Not really.

Look at the guys who were in a similar place at Tottenham. Would Aaron Lennon dominate MLS? No, he'd be a good player. Sigurdsson? He'd be good, but he wouldn't be the league's best player. He probably wouldn't be close. Dembele... perhaps, but it isn't certain.

frick the haters. I think this is a great move.

Get paid, Clint. Be THE star. You've earned it. You carried Fulham's arse for a few years, and were still forced to fight for your spot. You never really got a shot at Tottenham. frick 'em.

Go somewhere where you can put asses in the seats to see you. Take the winter before the World Cup off. Play in front of more fans at home in Seattle than you did at home in the EPL.

frick the haters. I'm on board.

This is very surprising and I am somewhat confused.

I suppose:

He will be making a shipload of money and is thinking about his long term future beyond soccer. He wanted a shot at the CL and and got it, Tottenham being better than Fulham. He already proved he was a good player in the BPL. He still loves Texas and the US, maybe the family wants to come home and be together now. Perhaps he wants to promote and add to the growth and development of MLS now. If you play in the MLS, it would be difficult to find a more competitive club and better atmosphere than Seattle. Finally, maybe he knows there is 0% chance of Bale being at Spurs this year and therefore Spurs has a correspondingly close chance of making the CL.

Just thoughts.

It's a total JV move. There are a handful of players who choose to go home when they are still playing well (when home is somewhere other than Germany, France, Spain, Italy, or England), but they're usually fricking morons who throw tantrums because they can't get their favorite food abroad or because they can't figure out the language after 5 years of living there.

Neither of these apply to Clint, so it's really a baffling decision. The one thing that makes sense is if this $32 million contract over 4 years is accurate, and I have no reason to doubt it. in that case, it's a purely financial move. It won't help him become a better player but it will help set him up for life.

What's most interesting about the $32 million contract though is what other USMNT players are going to demand to stay in MLS after their contracts are up.

$150,000-$200,000 just isn't going to cut it. Most importantly, I doubt Donovan is going to sign again with the league for $2.5 million annually. I bet he is going abroad in the winter.
