define "symptoms" and the earliest precise moment an individual could transmit Ebola.

and that would be tragic IF a baby in the USA got ebola, but I would be more concerned with other disease (i.e. that enterovirus) affecting babies than ebola.

actually it is pretty hard to spread
quote:

Ebola is not spread through casual contact; therefore, the risk of an outbreak in the U.S. is very low. We know how to stop Ebola’s further spread: thorough case finding, isolation of ill people, contacting people exposed to the ill person, and further isolation of contacts if they develop symptoms. The U.S. public health and medical systems have had prior experience with sporadic cases of diseases such as Ebola. In the past decade, the United States had 5 imported cases of Viral Hemorrhagic Fever (VHF) diseases similar to Ebola (1 Marburg, 4 Lassa). None resulted in any transmission in the United States.

Actually, the enterovirus IS much more worrisome to me. I'm not freaked out at all about Ebola. I'm just not partnering with my tennis friend tomorrow. She can play line 3 with someone else until after that Dr appt.

That said, it seems that containing Ebola seems to depend a lot on

isolation of ill people
and many people like my friend's husband (who just flew back today from west Africa via the Middle east) refuse to go to the Dr bc the have "the flu."

I think people should be told to calm the eff down but telling people that it's hard to spread may make many not seek medical care if they think sneezing all over shopping carts won't do anything.

There are a lot of oil & gas guys around here who travel to that region frequently. They need to keep their sneezy selves at home or go to the Dr.

Let's take this the level I work, shall we.

quote:

Assessment of the Risk of Ebola Virus Transmission
from Bodily Fluids and Fomites

We found EBOV to be shed in a wide variety of bodily fluids during the acute phase of illness, including saliva, breast milk, stool, and tears. In most cases, the infected bodily fluid was not visibly contaminated by blood.

===========

Of particular concern is the frequent presence of EBOV in saliva early during the course of disease, where it could be transmitted to others through intimate contact and from sharing food.

===========

The isolation of EBOV from semen 40 days after the onset of illness underscores the risk of sexual transmission of the filoviruses during convalescence.

Now again, infection of US Physicians suggests we may not yet have a complete handle on mechanisms of transmission. Right?

Please excuse me but I have been studying anatomy and molecule cell biology and histo since 5am and I am having a hard time understanding what your argument here is. Could you please clarify?

yes I know ebola is spread by fluids from infected ppl

are we still talking about my uncle because he doesn't share food with his patients?

or have sex with them?

Your own link (at the top in bold) says that if guidelines and procedures are followed that the risk of transmission is low (I couldn't get it to copy and paste for some reason). So what are you trying to say?

Was he in West Africa for a few days or did his plane just stop there on the way back from the Middle East? Further, if he just came in there is no way that your friend could have caught the virus and be symptomatic by tomorrow morning. I would worry more about catching a flu indirectly.

BTW, it should be reassuring that the idiot in Dallas didn't get Ebola by some pure chance encounter. He was caring for a person he knew had Ebola and was on their death bed (beyond symptomatic) days before he came to the US.

Why is Ebola spreading so fast in West Africa? Because of morons like Mr. Duncan who thinks the best thing to do after caring for someone with Ebola is to immediately go visit a bunch of family. If he survives he should be arrested.

Agree.

Imagine this conversation :

Family member: (Hugs African cousin) Hey cuz! Good to see you, how was your flight?

Duncan: (In heavy African accent) Oh brudder, I'm beat! I was up all night before I Ieft taking care of my neighbor with Ebola. Then I had to carry her body 1 mile to bury her! Give me a nutter hug cuz!

Family member: WTF!
