First they say this:
quote:

Spokesman Josh Earnest said that current anti-Ebola measures, which include screenings in West African airports and observation of passengers in the United States, will be sufficient to prevent the “wide spread” of the virus.

Then they sat this:
quote:

West African countries are screening travelers for elevated temperatures, but it is possible to be infected and not show signs for several weeks.

What a fricking circus this administration is.

but we know that it's a lot more contagious than AIDS because doctors and nurses are getting Ebola but you never hear of them catching AIDS,
Exactly.

The disease isn't contagious until symptoms appear. Symptoms include fever, headache and fatigue. At that point, the Ebola virus is spread via bodily fluids.
Get the fast facts on Ebola
Health workers are at especially high risk, because they are in close contact with infected people and their bodily fluids. Adding to the danger, doctors may mistake the initial stages of an Ebola infection for another, milder illness.

take it easy. You are not going to catch it from a United airline seat. IF you worked in the hospital and were dealing with the patient you might want to be careful.

However if you are that concerned about it, just take the travel size lysol wipes and wipe down your seat then use germ x on your hands.

Quarantine people who have been to that region. Better safe than sorry.

the correct answer it to cut off nonessential travel to that region. Then if you do have to go to that region a month long isolation period.

nobody travels to Africa unless it essential.

Why a month? Symptoms take 10 days to appear, so 2 weeks would be fine.

HOWEVER, IT IS NOT CONTAGIOUS IF THERE ARE NO SYMPTOMS! Get symptoms, go to the hospital.

Serious question. If it's not contagious when there are no symptoms, how are all these people contracting it? Are they kissing or having sex with sick people? Everyone keeps saying it's only transmitted by sick people and bodily fluids. How are doctors and nurses contracting it?

Sigh, you realize they screen at the African airports and people cannot transmit the disease unless they are showing the symptoms which can incubate for weeks. You also realize if we banned flights from Africa all they would have to do is fly over from Europe.

Um, number one, we wouldn't ban flights "from Africa". Africa is a big place. Ebola isn't all over Africa.

Number 2, the proper response to such an outbreak is to restrict travel FROM the outbreak to ANYWHERE so, Europe shouldn't be a problem.

Alas, we are so busy being PC in the west that one day, we're going to act way too f'n slow and a disease that is a real problem will f us in the a$$

Well. One doesn't go straight from no symptoms to full blown ebola and you're screwed symptoms. The dude in Dallas walked around for four days before they got bad enough that he went back to the doc.

In those four days, he could've transmitted in myriad ways

Well, it aint like doctors and nurses treat everyone who walks in the door with fever headache and a sore throat as if they have ebola.

Hell, last time I had a sore throat, I had a doctor pushing my tongue down with a depresser while his face was about 10 inches from mine looking down my throat.

But Obama assured us it could never get here! He wouldn't lie to us?

Obama is more worried about the bad visual of quarantining black nations than he is about ebola or any other disease for that matter.

He's taking the calculated risk that worst case, a few people here die. He's good with that as long as he doesn't have to "abandon" black nations.

But what about the ones in Africa? I'm sure they knew what they were dealing with and were very cautious, and still got it.

And, this aint new.

To reference Zach's earlier point.

One wonders. How many Americans died of AIDS after contracting it from a perfectly legal immigrant who had it once we stopped banning those with AIDS from immigrating? You KNOW this can't be an insignificant number but, it was an "acceptable" number when compared with the "visual" of keeping people of color from seeking American medical services.

You can pretty much bet that someone ran the numbers and they determined it was an "acceptable" problem.

As BHP pointed out. I would assume a few things are drivers.

1)Far more opportunities for safeguards to fail. A 98% safeguard is probably great if you only run into the occasional person with ebola. But, of course, as numbers grow.......

2)They don't have anything vaguely resembling the type facilities we do here so, it's probably a fair bet that they don't have 98% safeguards.

Thanks for the replies. I'm just very leary about the "only contracted through bodily fluids" statements with the number of medical staff contracting it.

Maybe I'm having a flashback from the movie Outbreak. "It's gone airborne!"
