Hostages were a huge deal, I was in pre-school. I just remember my grandpa being so mad at Carter and calling him worse than Nixon. My grandfather hated Nixon more than any human being I know of, as he was the XO on my grandfather's first ship (supposedly).

In terms of history--
1) moon landing
2) 911 since it was the event that lead into major US involvement in the ME and may very well be the precursor to a major, world changing war in that part of the world--like WWII was
3) In terms of US history--JFK's assassination simply because it was the end of an innocent era and the beginning of a very turbulent one.
Nixon to China may very well have been the most important event of my life--time will tell. It was the beginning of the rise of China out of the stagnation and brutal decades of war following the Japanese invasion in the thirties and their own civil war and the rise of the communist. (It made a huge amount of news at the time of the trip too.)

I remember the reports every night on the number of people killed and wounded in the Vietnam. My mother kept a color map of Vietnam on the inside of one of our kitchen cabinets and if Cronkite or Brinkley mentioned where the Big Red One was in a broadcast she would mark it on the map. She sent packs and packs of KoolAid to my uncle over there.
You know the first 14 years of my life I just assumed I would be drafted. Instead of talking about what we were going to do after high school we used to talk about what we were going to do after we got out of the army.
