God, how refreshing would it be to have 2 very qualified candidates from BOTH parties in a statewide election? Not sure that has happened in my lifetime.

Somewhat related, my boy Chris England is seriously considering a run for the US Senate seat. He probably doesn't have much of a chance, but would be nice to see him get some more exposure.

Honest question and we were discussing this in the office after watching the ad. How bad of a mayor do you have to be to mess up things in Huntsville? They have so much Fed money coming in I just couldn't imagine how you can't attract business and growth.

Is he that good or just in that good of a position?

The last 8 years have actually not been the "greatest" for what is the biggest industry for Huntsville: contract positions. Yes, they still come, but Obama turned NASA into basically the FAA for space and the privatization of the military had slowed - yet Huntsville continued to grow. He also came in and cut some fat from the city when they were struggling financially after the 2008 collapse, turning it around.

My dad worked for the city for 30 years before retiring and said that the Mayoralship was Battle's until he chose to leave, and has nothing but positive things to say about him. Not only did he bring military jobs in, under his reign he has seen Huntsville "modernize" faster (in my opinion) than Birmingham or Mobile and made the super tough decision to let the Huntsville Stars go (the minor league baseball team) - because there wasn't a need for it (even though the "public" opinion would have been to keep the money waster) In a lot of ways I wish I lived in Huntsville still instead of Jefferson County, but you know, jobs and all that jazz.

So yeah, to answer your question - too a point he could have just sat and it would have been ok, Loretta Spencer (the Mayor before him) did it for many years, but he has gone over and beyond and done a really good job.

Yes I don't really think the governor can do much. The ignoramuses elected in the black belt and Birmingham are always going to be an obstacle. There are also quite a few good ol boys who understand that and just use state government for their own benefit

Republicans have a super majority. There's not much those "ignoramuses" can do to stifle things.

I'm not sure this is opinion at all. I don't know how anyone could deny this statement. I'd just go ahead and say Huntsville has modernized faster than any other city in Alabama.

You do realize "the ignoramuses elected in the black belt and Birmingham" are like... a super small minority that have almost no power, so your blame should be squarely focused on the idiot Republican you elected.... right?

I have no shame about voting for Bentley, either time. He did a great job in his first term and there was no way to predict his epic descent in his second term. I am proud our state legislature did not allow him to push through much of the nonsense he tried to implement in the past few years. I'm especially disappointed with his opposition to a lottery to support the general fund once it became clear that drastic changes need to occur, and am hoping his removal will help that idea move forward.

Doesn't Huntsville have the largest fiber network in the state? Or am I imagining that? That alone makes it seem like a factual statement to me.

Walt Maddox is the stupidest asshat I know. The inept way he handled the tornado recovery is evidence enough that he should not be in charge of anything more complex than a lemonade stand.

Mississippi would love it for Walt to become Governor. It wouldn't take long for us to replace them as the worst state in every category known.

I live in Huntsville, and this is the first thing that I thought of when I heard he was wanting to run for governor. He's been an outstanding mayor, and Huntsville is in outstanding shape right now. He has been extremely active in bringing businesses and jobs to this city, and also has overseen renovation of the downtown district along with infrastructure improvements with the current population growth in the city. Hell, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the state.

Now, it would take a complete moron to screw Huntsville up considering the technology that is at the core of the city. But with the politicians in this state, there are plenty of complete morons to go around. He will definitely be getting my vote, and I doubt I'll even think twice about it.
