That was me with my child. I tried time out & loss of privileges, the 2 most effective disciplining methods in our house at that time. He needed to learn not to run into the street and he needed to learn quickly. He thought it was funny to test me and he chose the street as one testing ground. The 3rd time, he nearly got hit and caused a minor accident. Yes, I spanked him. I didn't have time to try additional parenting methods on top of what we'd already tried. The next time he could have died.

But these circumstances are quite different than most instances that people punish their kids. The natural consequences were obviously too severe, and your punishment was probably immediate (which is important). Most situations are not similar to that. I just find that people are quick to punish undesirable behavior, when it would be far more effective to teach, model, and reinforce desirable replacement behaviors. Not to mention, it is not uncommon that what was meant to be punishment is actually a reinforcer for the undesirable behavior.

My post was used as an example to another poster who said that spanking was always wrong. That's just not true. There are extreme circumstances where spanking is, in fact, the most effective parenting technique available.

I don't believe spanking should be the first resort in discipline or used frequently. However, people who throw out blanket statements saying that spanking is ALWAYS bad and NEVER an effective discipline technique are ridiculous.

We use to have a Golden Retriever. and with most young dogs they are pretty undisciplined. One day our dog was being a bad dog and my Mom took a comb and threw it at her, hit her square between the eyes. Sure that isn't a spanking, but every time the dog would see it from than on she would immediately stop acting bad. Spanking can be effective, sometimes it isn't effective.

True. Dogs learn from negative and positive reinforcement. You can't sit your dog down in your lap and say "Fluffy, what issues are you having that causes you to be so bad?"

Can't disagree with your reasoning.

Overall, it just bothers me that people use something that is intended to hurt a child as a primary method and/or are completely unaware of how ineffective they are using this method (e.g., waiting 6+ hours to administer the punishment when the other parent gets home; delayed feedback is not very effective).

Very familiar stories. And I agree.

Whipping a four year old with a switch until he bleeds is excessive IMO.
