couldn't we fund a single payer system
Sure! Single payer should work well for groceries, cars, houses, cellphones, etc.

Here's how it works.
We pay taxes to the government. The government randomly decides what it will pay for groceries, cars, houses, cellphones, etc.. Then we walk into the stores, or car lots, or homesites and get them for "free".

we already spend $1,000,000,000,000 more then the revenue we take in. We need to cut, not shift spending.

Also, as stated elsewhere, we do not want a VA style system in this country....

We could also do something like, i don't know, legalize marijuana and tax it. That tax revenue would go a long, long way.

Sure and allow people to sell it and make money. If there is so much tax revenue that you can finance single payer then this industry could support enough people that we could all pay for our own healthcare.

I would love to put all the "MUH SINGLEPAYERZ" folks on military or VA healthcare for a year.

That idea would die REAL goddamn quick.

What percentage of an average healthcare premium is targeting for profit?

10%? 15%? What do you think it is?

not sure, but being that the bigger, most available companies are public traded companies I'm sure they are priced to make a profit

Of course they have a profit target. Even the not-for-profit companies have to profit.

The government will have to run healthcare at a profit or premiums will continue to go up.

I don't understand why so many people can't see this.

Profit is not the target you should be aiming for.

No one blinked an eye when the unfunded public/private graft ready $1 Trillion infrastructure plan was announced.

There are any number of ways to finance Single Payer...sell the millions of acres west of the Rockies owned by the Federal Govt, tax levy's on Big Pharma which already makes absurd profits, an excise on Oil and Gas to be exported overseas, the legalization and heavy use tax on Marijuana, the reduction of Foreign Aid, etc....

When those insurance companies merge you will be f*#cked.

Either the Gov tells the companies how much they can f*#ck you or they charge you whatever they want.

Life for profit.

Interestingly, since obamacare came into existence my premiums have increased at a rapid rate not seen prior. So, frick govt involvement.

No. This isn't like education funding for college where so many people were wasting millions of dollars having a good time, making demand and pricing for higher education artificially rise. This will encourage more providers to enter the market. Also, we need to remove the damn borders that allow the shitty pricing in the first place.

Uh, quite a few of us blinked.

You don't really understand what that magnitude of national government growth would mean and cost do you?

Again as others have said, look at the VA. That will be what a single payer system will be like. Except expand the scope, costs, and problems by a massive margin.
