The argument doesn't work. It was during an election year with a lame duck POTUS.

Trump can tear them apart. All he has to say is he will lift the temporary ban if they give him an up and down vote on his nominee. Democrats won't know what to do. If the outrage really is that big, they'll get crushed. If it isn't, we'll know that the protests are astroturf as suspected.
