For California it may not make a difference. But in Louisiana if UHC, Aetna, and Cigna take the same stance to sit out, we are talking a bigger percentage.

UHC at my hospital in Acadiana is about 7% of our overall volume, and 14% of our managed care volume.

Which really means there will be a two tiered healthcare system analogous to private and public education system.

The haves will pay for the public and private healthcare and receive excellent healthcare. The percentage of people that will be able to afford this will probably max out at 10%.

The rest of the 90% will enjoy the fruits (mostly rotten) of public healthcare.

The tragedy is that before Obamacare 84% of the people were enjoying excellent healthcare for the most part. Now to cover that 16% without healthcare (they still got emergency room care) we need to down grade the healthcare or make it more expensive for the 84%.

great post.

I thought that was against the law?

Currently yes....but don't underestimate the insurance companies ability to enact change via aggressive and effective lobbying...it's happened before

Hopefully the carriers that are not participating will think about experimenting with a plan that is offered regionally or nationally.

Would make economic sense. Perhaps that's why it's illegal.

I had heard BC has 80% of Louisiana.

Might turn out to be a blessing in disguise. If they already have a near monopoly, Louisiana consumers are overpaying and there won't be as much room for premium increases when Ogumpcare kicks in.

I'm worried about the Landmass. I saw a map that showed market share for the largest insurer, and we were the only state below 50%. Since we had a competitive marketplace and a lot of consumer choice before Ogumpcare, we'll probably see some of the biggest increases.

So the choices will be limited, thereby keeping prices higher.

Higher prices have nothing to do with choices. They have to do with "no preexisting condition" actuarials, risk pool shifts due to requirement of most-to-least expensive cost ratios driving young healthy consumers out of the market, no compensatory fine/taxation, and expansive unnecessary Obamacare coverage requirements.
