Universities and grad programs have to rely on test scores because grade inflation has become so ridiculous.

Thank you. Jesus, it needed to be said. My daughter is in high school and the whole secondary education system has become a joke. The average- keep in mind, AVERAGE- GPA for the entire school is now a 3.43. Let that sink in for a bit. If you're "only" making two A's and four B's then you're dragging the school down. This is a public school, keep in mind. Yet most of these kids are making middling/average scores on their SATs and other standardized tests. (Which is the way the bell curve works- most kids are average. Gasp!) Now there's a huge controversy and parents can't understand why their precious angels are "honor students" yet are scoring average on their standardized tests. They're furious with the school and PTA meetings are shite shows of white middle class soccer mom fury. So the answer must be that clearly little Ryker and Mason and Bryn are geniuses- they've got straight A's. So the tests are the problem. This post was edited on 4/8 at 8:16 pm

The SAT and ACT are much different today from back when a lot of us took them. When I took the SAT it was basically an IQ test. It measured potential. Very un PC. Dumb kids who were given good grades were exposed. Now these tests measure what you were taught and retained in high school.
If potential was the main factor for being accepted into college in these days and times, the acceptance rate for your average state university would be flirting with single digits.

Not everyone lives in the city. $100k puts you among the elite if you live in Plattsburgh or Elmira.

Why can't people see that a college degree is a frickin investment. Going to college isn't a right. You pay/borrow money to be able to make more in the long run. If you plan on majoring in Chinese checkers or women's studies where you will struggle to make 40k a year, maybe you shouldn't go straight to a 4 year university unless you are in a financially stable situation. You probably need to stay instate unless you are on scholarship. If you weren't a great student or are limited financially you can take classes at a CC for pennies on the dollar, even free in most scenarios if you play your cards right. It boggles my mind that people think it costs 100k to get a college education.

I made the genius decision that I had to go out of state to my dream school. I dug my grave, but I'm gonna get myself out of it. My scholarship covered hardly anything. My parents had shitty credit so they couldn't consign any aid. I had to fund my own education through working and loans, still am as I'm applying to PA school. At each of my previous institutions I attended, the financial aid offices worked with me and informed me of all of the options I had to fund my schooling since I was on my own as far as loans go. Now I am up to my eyeballs in debt, and it's about to double if I get into PA school, but I am making an investment and am going to FVCKING PAY IT OFF MYSELF. If you want to go to college, there is a way to FVCKING go. The same people consistently bitching about the costs of a college education are the ones who give zero effort to even start school or majored in something where they are struggling to make money in the field they KNOWINGLY majored in.

In my opinion, free college for all will devalue the college degree. Like many already do, employers will prefer candidates with Master's degrees or above, valuing a bachelor's degree even less than it is currently. I'm not saying the current system is without its flaws. How I would approach the issue is to have the credit hours within each major correlate to the median salary of that field. For instance, at the same institution, a student majoring in social work or communication will pay less per credit hour compared to a chemical engineering major. There would be a fiat rate for gen eds.

Rant over

TLDR-You can go to college for far less than 100k. College is an investment, not a right.

This is bad policy. The traditional scholarship system fills schools with achievers, whereas this system will fill schools with underachievers who drag down the system and dilute the value of a diploma.

Nothing is "free". Upper class folk will pay for this benefit and see none of it.

First of all no they won't pay for all of it....they will pay for the lions share of it....and they will have an educated workforce to employ who isn't strangled by debt to start their adult lives and will therefore be more viable and not nearly bankrupt and having all of the issues that accompany staggering debt.

Who the hell do upper class folks go to when they need chemotherapy? The kids of upper class folks? Most likely the kid of a middle class background who was afforded some sort of educational assistance....wealthy people receive more benefits from a stable middle class than the middle class does...always have, always will....especially in the United States.

So poor households, which by and large do not send kids to college, will be paying taxes so middle class and upper middle class kids can go to college for free.

Stupid idea.

BTW- a household earning 100k a year has no business getting funds for college tuition.

$100K in NYC ain't a lot of money my friend..not for household income. Up state NY it might be a small fortune though....

So in theory a successful entrepreneur who never went to college could be forced to pay for kids to go to school the rest of his life. I hope this bankrupts the state so people will see how "free" it is.

I don't have children and I've been paying for other people's children to go to school for a long time.

$100K for a family was a joke in most places in NY when I was a student there over a decade ago. Let's not even talk about families from the City, Long Island, and the surrounding counties.

There's a whole lot more of NY out there

A family making $125k a year probably shouldn't need a ton of need based support in-state, really. I'm not a huge fan of this one. At that point it should be mostly merit based.

But let's not act like $25k for a 4 year degree is an insurmountable burden even in NYC though. Modest savings and loans gets you there even without scholarships. At $100k (soon to be $125k)

Putting away $10 a week for 18 years will get you over halfway there

There just aren't enough white collar jobs out there. Having everyone go to college means you will continue to have college graduates waiting tables. Therefore, tax payers get a poor investment.
