SNAP consumers buy more soda, less nutritious food than non snap household

This is the first study of its kind. The folks who did the study suggest legally limiting the program

While the report, published recently, suggests that a disproportionate amount of food stamp money is going toward unhealthful foods, the U.S.D.A. said it was unfair to single out food stamp recipients for their soft drink consumption.

No it's not. It's my tax money. I'm not opposed to soda and potato chips, but if you want to buy it, work your way off welfare.

Part of the reason is because it's cheap. When you don't have a lot of money you end up buying cheap food. It's a vicious cycle hard to get out of. 2 or 3 liters of coke for the same price of milk.

As I have mentioned elsewhere, I would like to see food stamps replaced by public gardens and farms in which recipients must contribute (if physically able) labor in order to receive the food. This would be more nutritious, it would give people a sense of worthwhile labor, and it would reduce costs for taxpayers.

I guess we can do what the democrats did in philly, raise taxes on sodas so it makes it more expensive for poor folks to afford it.

This is such a crock. They buy that crap in mass because it's cheap AND easy.

God forbid you put a little effort into your meals to benefit your health. Oh that's right we'll pay for that too. Pathetic.

The cheapest food requires some work to prepare. Can't be bothered beyond opening a bag or throwing something in a microwave and that's why poors end up with cheap shitty processed foods.

But the food and beverage industries have spent millions opposing such measures,
