I can tell you from face to face experience in the store I manage. The EBT-food stamp customers buy hundreds of dollars of the best roasts, ribeye steaks, sausage, chicken for frying, cookies, donuts, fresh and frozen pies and cakes[lots], bags and bags of candy, ice cream 3 or 4, potato chips[lots], and a lot of sugary drinks. Average of $600 a customer and I,the manager, has to buy specials and ad items for 50 or 60 dollars and they get $600. Obama really got this out of line.
It's not liberals to blame. Blame the agricultural lobbyists.

Was she white?
No. She was black. I don't think race really matters in this regard. I've seen a lot of trashy people of both races working the system like this.
Welfare, food stamps, public housing, etc. needs to be temporary assistance. There is no incentive for these people to help themselves. Then again, any person with a little drive and ambition would want more out of life.

In states where they have done this it was found that the expense of administrating drug tests was more expensive than taking away payments from people who flunked.
Just because the government sucks at administering ANY program efficiently and affordably doesn't mean it's a bad idea.

Good idea. Collective farms would be an awesome way to start socializing agriculture.
No. Socialized agriculture does not work. This is for the poors only.

Good luck telling the senators from Iowa, Ohio, Kansas, Nebraska, Montana, North and South Dakota, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and so on that we need to ban people on food stamps from buying things made from corn, wheat, soybeans, sugar, potatoes, beef and so on. Good luck. The farm and agricultural lobbyists are very powerful.

As I have mentioned elsewhere, I would like to see food stamps replaced by public gardens and farms in which recipients must contribute (if physically able) labor in order to receive the food. This would be more nutritious, it would give people a sense of worthwhile labor, and it would reduce costs for taxpayers
Yep.
The initial move toward cards and the ability to buy anything were to remove the stigma. A stigma toward using public funding is a good thing IMO.

SNAP consumers buy more soda, less nutritious food than non snap household
This is the first study of its kind. The folks who did the study suggest legally limiting the program
I wonder what the correlation is between these households and those that require government assistance for healthcare related to diabetes and hypertension.

But you just said it wouldn't work? So it will suddenly work for the poor but not everyone else?

but the whole program has been co-opted by the food lobby
Right. It's another corporate welfare program and the corporate lobbies own the politicians. As usual.

2 or 3 liters of coke for the same price of milk.
So they buy a 2 liter of coke instead of a gallon of milk. Hence the reason they're poor, they're stupid.

Part of the reason is because it's cheap. When you don't have a lot of money you end up buying cheap food. It's a vicious cycle hard to get out of. 2 or 3 liters of coke for the same price of milk.
Yeah. I drink lots of soda because it is cheap...
Oh, actually no I don't. I drink water because it isn't full of worthless calories. Not only is water calorie free, it is free.
But I guess I am crazy.
Thinking someone subs soda for milk because it is cheap is crazy.

Inexpensive, pennies on the dollar water at their fingertips, but instead they travel all the way to the store to buy nasty arse chemical water.

That would be a good idea, but you know that senators from corn producing and sugar producing states would be against this.
And if you want to ban potato chips, Doritos, snack cakes you will have a whole bunch of agricultural interests opposed to it.
These would be republican politicians. Do you think the senators from Idaho want to discourage potato consumption? I'm pretty sure the senators from Georgia will look after the interests of Coca-Cola.
You're not wrong. The big supporters of food stamps are agricultural companies, food and beverage conglomerates, and retailers.
To hell with them all.

This is why we shouldn't give food stamps. Instead, we make available all the rice, beans, dried milk, etc. they need to survive and let them go get a job if they want nicer food. We don't have to let them starve but we sure don't need to pay for whatever they want to eat beyond the basics.

Don't play dumb. You know there is a difference between community gardens for the poor (which, I must add, will not be equal in its distribution - labor and ideas contributed gain more food) and the entire socialization of the agricultural system.
There hasn't really been a case of socialized anything that can even compare to markets. But since I would be an evil, greedy fascist shitlord for letting people starve because they're too stupid to provide for themselves, I'm okay with allowing them land to work on.

This happened under Obama's watch. Quit deflecting.
