Color me shocked. You mean to tell me that high speed rail is always exponentially more expensive than promised, takes decades longer than promised to build, and is a giant waste of money?

It appears it isn't even being built. You could argue that if you put a bullet train loop in SE Louisiana it would be ridden, but to do it you have to build it. They could have already built it if they would have just took the money they already spent and gave it to a company and said build the damn train!

No, but I am sure you could build at least an inch of track for that

Yeah plus you can't really carry around your baggage with you. And you could get robbed or pushed in front of a train. Or stabbed on a bus like that girl in the UK last week.

Really mass transit just sucks and should always be avoided.

Let's make the wild assumption that the average riders time is $1/min. So you need to save 800 million minutes for it to make sense. Assume payback over ten years, 20 minutes round trip... 400,000 riders per a year? I know my assumptions may be off but I don't think it was that bad of an investment.

I have a business proposition for you. It involves very little of your time and most of your cash. I promise.....you can't lose.

I assumed, probably wrong, that this is covered by normal ticket fares

re: High Speed Rail: $12B wasted
To be fair, it takes Louisiana contractors 4 years and $146 million to add a lane to 4 miles of flat-land interstate. $36m a mile.

That would be over $6b in the distance between Seattle and Portland.

What they spent on that particular leg was $800m to only slightly improve 170 miles of existing track. $4.7m a mile. Still probably pretty wasteful.

My only problem with massive rail investments are that smart cars may render them obsolete in 15-20 years.

i kind of wish they would bring back the train that went from nola to tiger stadium, with stops in town along I-10. Man i would go to BR more and attend more Saints game.

The freight operators that own the track make more of a profit with freight than passender, so they focus on frieght. In order to run any passenger service, you have to lease track from the freight operator - with the stipulation that you always yield to frieght. You can't run a passenger service efficiently under those terms. See: Amtrak.

The one place where Amtrak makes money is the northeast corridor....

They own their own tracks from Washington to Boston ... That 12 billion could have been put to much better use improving that corridor where people actually ride the train
