They are racist and bigoted and will steal a "haole" blind. Go to Costa Rico. Hawaii is very overrated.

Let's just trade Hawaii for Puerto Rico. Both are dying to be socialist deadbeats; we wouldn't have to change the flag, and it would be easier for most of country to get to PR than Hawaii considering most of the population is located in the eastern part of the US.

Sure we'd lose their goofy shirts, punch, and pineapples. However, we'd gain rum and good domestic baseball players.

I'm not sure how this will work on a single state level. What's to stop every deadbeat in the country from moving to Hawaii and crashing the system? You would have residency requirements, of course, but Hawaii already has a huge homeless problem. Plenty of people would be happy to bum on the beach long enough to start collecting a check.

Basic income is interesting and may actually become more popular in the near future.

The thing with basic income is it needs to be an either or situation with other welfare.

You give basic income but eliminate all other welfare benefits.... the problem with that is that some need more help than others. Like say you give everyone X amount of dollars but completely eliminate help for retarded children where care could run in the tens of thousands of dollars a year for therapy.

To their credit, we did literally steal the islands from them.

Hawaii has the largest population of homeless people in the US per pop. This bill is going to motivate a lot more people to not work.

If Hawaii believes it's best then I say great, and good luck.

Now I don't want to read later that they aren't going to include immigrants, but that's another story.

the idea of paying people a salary just for being alive.

We used to call that an "allowance." It was for children. Once we were old enough to cut grass or babysit, the allowance went away.

Actually, it's not they strict anymore. They actually allow tours of the island departing from Kauai. It's not like Deliverance. The natives there have worked for the Robinson family's business interest for decades. Mainly cattle farming and self sustaining farming. They will still "ask" you to leave the island if you do not visit on one of the tourist boats they now allow in.

Interestingly, the Robinsons are extremely land rich as they own damn near half of Kauai's undeveloped land but have almost nothing else in liquid assets except their small business interests on Ni'ihau.

Probably nothin' but airfare.
Hawaii is crazy.
When California secedes, the two ought to merge.

So......is this when I say "frick it" and go live in Hawaii risk-free for a bit before the economy collapses from others doing the same thing and the cost of tourism skyrocketing even more than it is now?

At some point, due to automation, it will likely happen, but I think it may come in the form of credits or vouchers for certain commodities. Utility credits, food credits, etc., rather than actual income.

At this point in time, it's a pretty terrible idea, imho, but I could see it working temporarily in Hawaii. It will be funded with new taxes on tourists, not income taxes on locals, I'm sure. At least, until the new taxes take their toll on tourism.

Everyone in the rest of the country should become a resident of Hawaii and drain their system dry

It is funny.

The first rule of rights is that a true right requires no demands upon others, except to respect their rights.
