Had a lady in my office tell me that I've had untold privileges because of my last name. My dad was the first in our family history to graduate from college. He grew up on a farm in rural north Mississippi. I went to public school. I started working when I was 14 years old. People like to create the illusion that everyone who has a better life than they (real or imagined) got it not through hard work, but because of privilege.

Assuming you live in Iowa, how would you know anything about the racial dynamics of an integrated society. Your state's black population makes up a whopping 2.68% of the overall population. No offense, but it's always self righteous folks from lily white states that are the most critical of race relations in the South and have the strongest opinions about this supposed white "privelege". I know you weren't singling out the South in your post but I do think you have an uninformed view of so called white "privilege".

My family's roots are in iowa. I live in a different lily white state.
But I did go to school in Atlanta, and lived in other southern locales.

There are absolutely advantages to being white in this country. Not because of race itself but rather being in the majority... Your culture and ways of life are widely accepted.
But that's not a privilege. A privilege is granted to you by someone in power. It can be taken away. Therefore there is no white privilege because we were always in the majority and always in power, so no privilege was granted.
The idea of "check your privilege" makes no sense because it implies that if you don't then it'll be taken away, but it was never given to anyone in the first place. Therefore it is a mute concept with no meaning

I didn't mean to sound abrasive towards you btw. I just kinda roll my eyes at people from lily white states who share their opinions about racism in the South. To me it's like someone from Miami lecturing someone from Minnesota about ice fishing or someone from Colorado about snow skiing.

It is not helping and it is pretty annoying to those that simply want to get on with it. Yes, it can be annoying to be treated in a SUB-STANDARD way. But, there is no value in whimpering along with us by emitting ululant cries of 'we have it so undeservedly well'
the soft bigotry of low expectations does not ONLY apply to test scores, etc. It means thinking we can't express dissatisfaction about being poorly treated without demanding an apology for you being PROPERLY treated.
I love you my friend. But, I despise the "we have it so much better that we simply MUST acknowledge it." Puh-LEEZE. Just live your life and demand that you be treated correctly. Treat others correctly in return. That is enough.
