re: Define white privilege. And how is it a "privilege"?

white privilege is getting benefits from being white. An example of this is that a white male or female, who is reasonably dressed, can likely take a shite in any hotel bathroom in the world without being questioned by security at the hotel. white privilege is very real, if you can't see it, just look a little harder. Don't feel guilty about being white, be glad you have it, certainly better than the reverse.
OK
So what am I supposed to do about it, as a white man?

What reasonably dressed race would be questioned by security?

JEEBUS!
Why ask ME?
1) I don't give 2 shits about racists
2) I could not care less who anyone finds attractive. I don't care if you think Stacey Dash and Halle Berry are dog shite ugly.
It just seems like an odd question.
Please do not misunderstand. It is not an "inappropriate question"..it is not an "offensive" question. It just makes little sense to me.
I don't know why you may not like pizza or red beans, either. just FYI

I don't really think you do anything, checking your privilege is about awareness and attitude.
Feminism does a really shitty job explaining it. And there is a lot of anger on their side. For a group that pushes empathy, they cannot really empathize.

Depends on the location. I personally have seen people turned away at hotels before. Its a long story, but I saw some indians kicked out of a hotel. granted they didn't belong there, but neither did I. I just went into a really nice hotel to take a shite.

This is stupid and insulting to the actual "bad behavior" of suspecting the well dressed black guy.
To ascribe what SHOULD be as "privilege" is annoying. It is simply the way things ought to be.
It would be like giving a Good Citizenship medal for NOT raping children.

Over time white people have granted the same rights and opportunity to minorities, who have more rights here than anywhere in the world. In essence, white people granted a privilege to minorities. And since they are still the majority they can also take away that privilege through law.
No. This is exactly why we have a republic and not a direct democracy. It's designed to provide protections to the minority through the judicial system and the constitution.

Just to clarify I'm not saying that we should change law to take away civil rights.
My point was that with white people being in the vast majority hypothetically if their viewpoint changed they could change the laws. Without white peoples support, minorities couldn't have gained their rights. Therefore white privilege isn't a privilege by definition but rather "majority advantage".
By definition the rights that minorities enjoy could more accurately be called a privilege since technically the majority group in power could take them away.

So, are you insinuating that the Indians got kicked out because they were Indian? Do you know what they were doing to get them kicked out? (just trying to understand the story more)
Your story sounds nice, but I find it hard to believe, as I've never seen somebody kicked out of anywhere for using a restroom, just because of their race.

You're welcome. A lot of people want to hold tightly to any excuse to absolve themselves of their own failures whether that be financially or socially. Back during my first tour in the navy, my best friend was a half Puerto Rican marine from a single mom who had a girlfriend originally from China. Guess which one learned a new language, got into NYU then hired for big bucks at a top company?
There is a clear pattern to being successful and Asians in larger numbers subscribe to that pattern. Strong families who nurture and discipline their children and have a strong commitment to education will more often than not produce winners in society.
Those who do not will, we'll just go 180 on it.

I'm not allowed to eat pizza because the wife doesn't allow cheese in the house. Red beans are OK. Had some this week.

This sounds like the argument that minorities can't be racist because they don't "hold the power of the majority". These are intangible and undefinable theories that are being accepted as sociological facts.

It seems like all I ever hear about white privilege is white people bitching about white privilege.
I have NEVER heard this term or discussed this with a minority.

Do you think a black man in a suit and tie would be questioned by security for taking a shite in a hotel?

its a rather long story. But I was in india, and I went to take a shite and several indians were doing the same thing. The hotel let me in, and turned the indians away. They were actually dressed nicer than me, but not significantly so.
and I agree with green chili tiger. I only hear about white people bitching on the topic, I have never heard a person of color bring it up. Even my feminist friends don't even mention the concept.

I think it depends on the hotel, and the location. In most any US city, probably not. In Africa, maybe. The suit will cover up most anything, anywhere. But if you were to put them in more casual clothing, its a different story.
