Crime at "tipping point" in French Quarter but we have an un-needed airport terminal

Crime is out of control in New Orleans even in the French Quarter.
Of course Mitch is building an un-needed airport terminal and spent $2 million tearing down statues---(that would have paid the salaries of 40 cops making $50,000 a year).
Well they want all of us to continue to pay for state troopers in the Quarter while they keep the huge majority of the tourist tax dollars in the City.
Screw em. Somebody make Landrieu and the City Council run their city responsibly. (Do city council members still have drivers on the city payroll??)

The airport doesn't bother me. While a "government project" it's financed and paid for via airline landing/gate fees, and passenger taxes. The new airport does become a problem if its passenger counts can't be maintained thanks to less tourists/business travel due to crime fears.
But yes, excess spending in places like the statue removal are a symptom of failed leadership.

The statues were the distraction, good luck living or visiting that place....

Disagree. I travel around the country and our airport is one of the worst.

Luckily the airport is not even in New Orleans so you don't have to worry about getting jacked up on the way to the terminal by some of the local culcha.

Not sure how the airport and crime are connected. Taxpayers are only footing a fraction of the airport bill, which will probably be saved over the course of time. It costs a lot to maintain an old airport. And it doesn't have room for some of the bigger planes.
The monuments were a waste of money.

it is absolutely terrible, especially the terminal united comes in on. Not enough food or bathrooms or seats. Or really anything.

Agree. The new terminal is much needed.

Ya, MSY needed a lot of work, and just starting fresh is probably the way to go.

I agree with a lot of your complaints, but your hate for the airport is weird. Having more flights, especially international, is nothing but a positive for the city/state.

I disagree about the airport. That's a long overdue infrastructure project that could bring in more direct flights from Europe, which means more tourists, more conventions, and more money.

in French Quarter
My wife and I were in the French Quarter two weeks ago. My father's family is from there, I went to school, Elementary and later Graduate school there. I have a feel for the City.
On our recent visit it seemed like an angry place with a lot of tension, people walking or driving were less courteous than I had ever experienced there.
The Quarter and the New Orleans I knew are gone.

What are your talking about? The Statues are gone and all is peaceful and harmonious in the Big Sleazy now...

Our Airport is a piece of shite. It is very much needed.
I'm pretty sure we can build an Airport and police the FQ.

for the first time in many years i felt unsafe in the quarter the last weekend of jazzfest. Canal was unnerving. my wife declined a weekend there b/c of the crime and that last experience. if you knew how much she loves hotels and restaurants, you'd know the uneasiness is real. police presence was nil. we usually go every season, not so much anymore i fear.

It's not a tipping point --- it's as bad as it was 10 years ago.

It's like a 3rd world airport. Just flew to Denver through Austin. Our terminal is a joke compared to those 2 and Austin is small. Just really nice.
