But hey, you criticize Bush all the time!
Bush was absolutely wrong on Katrina. He should have IMMEDIATELY declared martial law when he realized he was not dealing with competent officals like Pataki/Giuliani and was actually dealing with 2 clueless idiots like Blanco/Nagin.
Then Honore would have been in charge on Monday, at the latest. We would have still been behind the curve (it would have been to late to avoid the stupid decision), but at least there wouldn't have been the bull$hit political blame/face-saving game they were playing while we were trying to save people, and the federal response would have been about 24 to 48 hours ahead of what happened.
So, Bush was wrong by not declaring martial law when it very clearly should have been declared - and it was all politics - on everyone's part.

Actual factual information is always nice in these discussions.
Good post.

Benghazi was a war act which the President is directly in charge off. Local flooding is just that, local with several layers of government paid to handle the siutation. Apples and figs.

so do you think Obama should do anything about all these kids coming across the border? should we send them back to Mexico?
What can he do? I guess either send them back or take them in.
Either way the biggest thing is that we got to fix the problem and not cure the symptoms. No use bucketing water out a sinking boat.

I was on the second heavy to land at Louis Armstrong International after Katrina, we flew 85 missions from our base. I have never seen so many helicopters in my life. Navy New Orleans was flat out insane.

Can you imagine the backlash he would have faced if he had declared martial law against a democrat Governor?

1. build a fence
2. build National Guard depots along border
3. first 6 months of service after Boot Camp is along border
4. win

one last thing on Katrina
On August 27, Blanco said this to the media, "I believe we are prepared. That's the one thing that I've always been able to brag about."
Bush's main frick up was that he believed her.
but i bet VB is one of those idiots that gets pissed because Bush didn't run out of the room full of children screaming when the towers were hit.

Great revisionist timeline. Bush is Satan.
And prior to that, what did the state and local authorities do to plan, prepare and mitigate (the fundamentals of NIMS)?
The answer? Nothing. Absolutely, positively nothing.
President Bush failed to direct the efforts after onset of crisis. He failed. Period.
Mayor Nagin and Governor Blanco failed to plan, prepare and mitigate prior to the storm, creating the crisis.
Try that on for size.

You made the accusation. Show me where I'm wrong.

You're lying. Ace Midnight can back me up. I was dating a Guardsman then. He was stationed at the Superdome. He was called up a few days before Katrina by Blanco. The helicopters Ace posted about were Blanco's doing.

Tell me, what could they have done that wasn't done. List what they could have done.
I lived in the Quarter at the time. I left late. Took me 12 hours to get to Lafayette. My next door neighbor, an old gentleman stayed. Guardsman made him leave at gunpoint a few days later. Short of doing this before the storm, I fail to see what else could have been done.

Who were the idiots that turned the boat brigade back at LaPlace? I met up with the group in Baton Rouge only to be stopped at LaPlace and turned around. We were armed and equiped to conduct water evacs on volunteer basis. This was an overwhelming response to the LDWF plea for boat owners to come help evac stranded NOLA citizens only to be rejected.

And 5 days after Bush told the media his FEMA director was doin a heckava job.

When your chief of staff whispers to the president "America is under attack", I don't expect him to "run out of the room full of children screaming when the towers were hit". I expect him to excuse himself rather than sitting there listening to "My Pet Goat".
And btw, the first tower had been hit already before Bush walked into that room. It was the second tower that got hit when he was advised that we were under attack. And he sat there.
Now you Bushbots say he didn't want to scare the children. Yet he spoke in front of the children an hour later using them as props.
But conservatives criticize Bush.

If local gov had done their job ahead of time there could have been a lot fewer deaths. That picture of the flooded school busess tells a lot... or little, about local gov prep.

of course.
But once it had happened, the federal government along with the local and state governments all could have done a lot better which would have led to fewer deaths.

Speaking of which. People like old presidents. I think if Bush is in the next election he might actually win. I think if Obama is in the next election he might actually win. I think if Bill was in the last election he would definitely win
