I imagine it won't be long into the first term before the sanctions on Russia are rolled back.

Will be interesting to see how Russia hawks in Congress respond. Honestly, how can this be seen as anything but pushback against congressional pressure re Russia?

I like and respect you too. apologies for going overboard.
That being said, I think it is the very definition of diplomacy to out people with successful history deaing with Russia in charge of our diplomatic branch.
There are 3 options.
1. Stay "chummy" with them, learning much and gaining influence over time.
2. Stay intractable. Learn nothing, expect violent conflict in the future.
3. Be adversarial, sanction and attack them, making the economy worse for the people of both countries.
Option 1 is the way to go, even with North Korea, Iran, Israel, Russia, Saudi etc. If America wants to be more prosperous, then they have to start setting the example for sane diplomacy. Obviously there is a lot more to this I can't hit typing on my phone.
anyhoo, JMO. Sorry if I offended.

You didn't offend, and I'm trying to draw a line between people who don't want us to engage with Russia because we object to various positions (be it domestic authoritarianism, using Islamic terror as a boogeyman, etc.) and those emphasizing personal relationships and alliance with Russia.
I think it makes total sense to promote personalities who can engage with Russia. But the possibility I object to is if favor toward Russia (not just willingness to engage) is some driving force behind these appointments.
In short, if this is breaking down artificial barriers put up between us and Russia for the purpose of constructive dialogue, fine by me. If this is some mutual admiration bullshite, a fisherman sees another fisherman from afar, Trump and Putin bromance stuff, I'm not a fan.

I agree with that. Unfortunately we have no way of knowing if that will happen. There are no indications that this guy will favor the Russian government over the US government, but there are indicators that he has gone to deal room with them successfully, meaning both sides got what they wanted.

I know nothing about this guy?
Are the leftist posters having seizures over the pick?
If yes then I am good with the selection.

He did his usual crabby disapproval, but I got the feeling that he doesn't really know enough to judge . . . his tweet just now kind of left his opinion up in the air.

Other than the fact he is a Texas Longhorn Alumni and Former Bandmember .....I kinda like the choice.
Will be interesting how he does.

At this point, he's easily a better choice than the Clinton/Kerry shiteshow and I'm willing to place a large sum wager right now that he'll produce better results than the both of them combined.
