[True] False
whew, that was easy.
The ones who don't work certainly have it easier than those who do.

True story. Our church does a lot of work with the poor in our community. For families in serious need, we help pay people's electricity bills, gas bills, rent, put gas in their cars, give them food, etc.
A few months back a lady called our church asking for help paying her electricity bill. She told our minister that she had several kids and their electricity had been turned off. The minister told her to come to the church to meet with him (this is for a simple screening to make sure they're not druggies). He gave her the address and started to give her directions on how to get to the church. She said, "That's ok. I'll just punch the address into my GPS."
He said she rolled up 20 minutes later in a late model SUV, equipped with GPS. The minister, btw, drives a 13 year old Kia.
I lived in South America for 6 years. I've seen poverty. I wouldn't say the poor anywhere "have it easy." But the poor in America are sure better off than the poor in most other places.

So, is it hard or easy?
It's hard. Consider my plight:
I have to use scratched golf balls when crossing a lake.
I can only afford the cleaning lady every other week.
I only have one TV.
My cell phone can't take pictures.
I only have 20 songs on my ipod.
For summer vacation I spend a day in Shreveport.

To suggest otherwise would show a complete ignorance of what real poverty looks like

Hell, the poor here have it easy compared to even the middle class of almost every other country.

The "poor" in America are obscenely rich on a worldwide scale.

They do compared to rest of world...poor in America gave electricity, running water, cable tv, and most have I phones...

I would go with living in a landfill like in Thailand or Bangladesh, but whatever.
Compared to most of the world our poor are doing alright. Biggest problem is those who are poor tend to remain poor for generations, but as TnM83 pointed out that is largely because our welfare system does nothing to discourage the choices that keep one poor. Welfare here actually tends to at least enable poor decision making, if not outright encourage it. All while writing the checks.

Poverty will always exist in societies, just like a classroom will have A, B, C, etc students. Our "F" students have healthcare, food, and a place to live. So, yeah.

Stage 1 for a year is as it is or a bit more assistance so someone can try and develop a skill someone would pay them for.
Stage 2 is you have to work for your benefits if you want to keep them doing whatever you get assigned to do. Like slave labor to earn your keep. Digging ditches, pouring concrete, road work, whatever is assigned you by the government to get your benefits. This stage would be indefinite. People could either: do it and earn their benefits, find something better (paying job), or move on to stage three.
Stage 3 is you don't do your assignment, you are on your own. No more help, no more moving back to stage 2, time to make it on your own or go ahead and die. No one owes you anything.
I think stage 3 should be:
Those poors should be processed into food for other poors.

Ninety-seven percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions.
I agree that the poor have it relatively easy in America compared to the rest of the world, but "color" tv? I've seen people in third world countries running color TV's off of car batteries. At this point, if you can even find a B&W, it's probably a collectors item. I don't even think I've heard that term since the Dire Straights song in the 80's.

I love when a poster drops a topic they know will elicit a certain response, throws in a link and high tails it..

I heard the term B/W TV just yesterday. Email from a friend in Texas:
Bob and Clara got married 50 years ago. They went out to dinner to celebrate.
Bob: "Ya know, Clara, when we first got married we lived in a shack, drove an old beat up car and watched TV on a 10 inch black and white. But every morning I woke up next to a beautiful 22 year old woman.
Now, we have a big house, 3 expensive cars and 3 big flat screen color TVs. But I wake up to an old ugly hag. Seems to me you haven't kept up your end of the bargain."
Clara: "Well, Bob, you find yourself a 22 year old woman. And I'll see to it that you end up in a shack, driving an old beat up car and watching TV on a 10 inch Black and White TV."

Absolutely true, poor in America has benefits and gets help that most of the worlds poor could only dream of.
