In regards to a solution, you would think they could have some sort of emergency override button that would allow the plane to be controlled remotely. If something was to go wrong, a centralized remote location could stabilize the flight.

Read "Skyhook" by John J. Nance...former airline pilot, has written several fiction and non-fiction books about the industry and serves as an expert commentator for (I believe) ABC News.

Not sure if this has been said already, but a more practical situation may be to have two doors, one for the cockpit, and another on the other side of the restroom area, which is about 3 feet away. When the pilot goes to the toilet, the FA closes the second door, and only then does the cockpit door open.

The pilot can access the toilet now, and the cockpit door is by default unlocked, as the 2nd door is now locked. The pilot goes to the toilet, and re-enters the cockpit area, locks the cockpit door, which in turn releases the 2nd door.

It's sort of like an air-lock on the space station. The same protocol can be used for delivering food to the cockpit crew.

PS: As a second measure, the FA can enter the cockpit while the other pilot is in the loo.

I'm not sure that you can do anymore, other than having the A/C be flown remotely from the ground if it comes to the worst case scenario.

You can never totally eliminate Evil, you can just make it harder for them to succeed.

Thanks, troubl.

I haven't been following this story too closely but I will be now. I can't believe this could have been done intentionally.

I am EXTREMELY curious to find out a)more about this guy and b)how this affects procedural changes for the future.

I hate saying I'm happy that it wasn't a mechanical problem... but I am.

Planes really don't ever crash due to mechanical problems anymore. It's virtually always pilot error.

Air travel is insanely safe. It just comes down to the pilot.

I'm the opposite. I'm an engineer so it would make me feel better if it was a mechanical problem because I know that can be fixed. I don't know how you fix "crazy". That why the Middle East just generally makes me uneasy. Just seems like a lot of crazy over there.

"We have found something which will now be taken for tests. We cannot say what it is at the moment but it may be very significant clue to what has happened," Markus Niesczery, a spokesman for Dusseldorf Police, told the Daily Mail late Thursday.

Bild reported that on several occasions his training at Lufthansa's flight school in Phoenix, Arizona, was interrupted for mental health reasons after he had a "serious depressive episode." Lufthansa is Germanwings' parent company. The German tabloid reported that Lubitz may even have undergone treatment after being what it called "demoted" several times during his training in the United States.

The newspaper referred to him as a mass murderer. It said the "episode" was noted on his medical records held by the aviation authorities. Der Spiegel also separately reported the findings that have not been confirmed. Germany's Federal Aviation Office would not confirm the report.

That too.
I wonder for people that take time off from school what % is attributable to each of the above reasons.

If someone is having major bouts of depression then I don't think they should be in charge of 100+ souls on a regular basis.

That is what I would consider to be mentally unfit to fly an aircraft.

It's possible this guy signed up for what looked like one of those free vacations if you listen to a timeshare sales pitch only to be forced to stay a weekend at Mohammed's Rest, Relaxation, and Radicalization B&B.

Come for the pancakes, stay for the intense brain washing.

Because in that case at least you need collusion. Yea if multiple members of a flight crew want to down a plane there is nothing you can do.

lots of things are possible. Doesn't make them likely. When jimmy is late for work, I don't assume he left to join ISIS. I typically assume the most likely scenario based on his history.

The CEO of Germanwings essentially confirmed that they guy had a medical leave. German law prevents discussing medical issues, and the CEO said German law disallowed him from disclosing more information.

Or, you can keep believing that muslim terrorism brainwashing was involved.

Not sure. I'd imagine for the ones who crash their fully loaded passenger plane into a mountain radicalizition is pretty higg.

How many people take time off from flight school proceed to crash their plane into a mountain?
