There may be no perfect system, but I expect they will look to tweak the current one.
I would hope they're constantly looking at improvements/ scenarios. Like someone said earlier, I think its protocol to always have two people in the cockpit. If a pilot needs to go to bathroom, then a flight attendant sits in until he returns. (sounds plausible, not sure if that's accurate or not though)

But if the door is locked they cant get in in the first place, theoretically.

That should usually be the case, but in a scenario such as this one apparently is, the hijacking is from within.

Fox News reporting that German authorities have deemed it pilot suicide. No link yet.

makes sense no clear connection to terrorist groups so likely suicide. This guy also has a history of depression.

Or with assistance from a FA or pilot the hijacker could get in.
Also, no FA sitting in cockpit would stop this same scenario if the pilot wanted to crash the plane. (Possibly if female pilot)
Some things can't be predicted. 99/100 shrinks wouldn't be able to talk to this guy and predict he would be capable of this. You can't end every pilots career over some small hint of possible depression in the past.
What's stopping a school bus driver from taking a bus full of kids off a cliff? Its just as likely to happen

For the people saying it wouldn't have happened with a FA in the cockpit. What's stopping a FA from disabling the pilot and causing this same scenario?
(FYI- This guy was a flight attendant before becoming a pilot for the company)

Maybe. But a Wall Street journal article said the guy had a gap in his flight training. What was he doing?

Maybe he's a convert and he self-radicalized. They'll check out his computer.

You know Muslim terrorists have been trying to hit Germany ever since they started having those anti-Muslim rallies. Take a plane full of Germans and crash it in France. Two birds with one stone.

It isn't foolproof but if it lowers the odds just a little bit, why not? I've seen this happen on planes I've been on and it doesn't seem to be a hassle at all.

Who knows what goes through this pilot's mind but say there was a female flight attendant he could have overpowered, maybe just the presence of this person would've deterred him from his actions which would've required hand to hand violence.

ETA: People like the pilot of the Egypt Air flight, it probably wouldn't matter. He put the thing in a straight nose dive.

Airlines are toughening up cockpit rules after French prosecutors accused the co-pilot of the Germanwings airliner that crashed in the Alps of wanting to “destroy the plane” when he was left alone on the flightdeck. EasyJet, Norwegian, Monarch, Emirates and Air Canada were among those who introduced new procedures to require two people in the cockpit at all times. EasyJet said it had taken the decision after consultation with the UK’s civil Aviation Authority.

The CAA has written to all UK carriers to ask what procedures they have in place for when one of the pilots leaves the flightdeck. Richard Taylor, CAA spokesman, said it was “very possible” that airlines could soon be required to have a member of the cabin crew stay in the cockpit if a pilot left for a break, as is the norm in the US.

The pre-emptive moves by the world’s airlines come as public concern over aviation safety mounts in the wake of the Germanwings crash, which killed all 150 people on board.

The link is to a financial times article, but you have to take an annoying survey to view it.

Taking a break during flight training is common. For the same reasons as taking a semester off at college. (Money, stress, temporary personal issues back home, career choice second guessing)

It would slightly prevent a pilot from doing this, but greatly increase the opportunity for a FA to do the same thing if they can disable the pilot.
I would say it would be much easier for a terrorist or evil person to get hired as a FA than pilot

There is no point in a terrorist attack that isn't claimed. If he had left a note or something.. sure, I'd buy terrorism.

Seems like just a suicide to me.. and the dude hated the world enough to bring the passengers down with him.

If one of the pilots decides to crash the plane during the take off or landing phase when the plane is at a very low altitude, there could be 10 people in the cockpit and there would be little they could do to prevent it. By the time anyone realized the plane was entering an unusual attitude it would be too late to recover given the close proximity to the ground.
