Looked at some today in Shreveport . They definitely look well built. I know that if I was going aluminum it would be at the top of my list

I have heard nothing but good things about their aluminum boats. Three of my customers have fished them and love them.

They are solid, and one of the guys I fish with has one. The biggest difference between it and my all-weld Tracker is the bell's and whistles are higher quality, but the boat/ride is the same. The Ranger just has quality accessories, storage, pumps etc. If you have the money go with Ranger, no doubt..

The only Ranger I've been on was a 2310 bay. Hell of a nice boat in rough or calm water.

Yay

I haven't been in one of the aluminum Rangers, but they look solid as hell. And I've heard nothing but good about them. I may be a little biased though, being that I have a Ranger. Even though it's an older 361V. My brother has a brand new 519C, and CamdenTiger is right about the bells and whistles. That's one thing (but definitely not the only thing) Ranger pays attention to.

I just bought the 188 a couple months ago and love it. Not sure if it's an option on the 178 but don't get the second console if you can. Easiest boat I've fished out of for fresh water and quality is second to none. Only complaint I have is common to all aluminum boats after owning a glass is the weight when trolling in the wind. It gets blown around much easier.

You may want to look at the 188 if only for the rod storage in the middle. I love that I don't have to lug my rods in and out of the camp every time I go down there.
Any questions that I can answer feel free to ask.

Can't comment on the Ranger, but I will tell you this, I have a 17.5' alum Skeeter with a 75. When the winds are above 10, its a rough ride. If you have the money I would go longer with a bigger outboard, 115 min. FYI they are coming out with a SHO in the 115...

ETA go big on the trolling motor too, I put a 74lb on mine, it might be overkill, but I can hold in some serious wind.

How do you think one of those would hold up fishing salt water?

Also, how big of a pain is that carpet to keep clean? Fish slime, mud, etc.

I need a smaller boat for Toledo Bend in the spring and for the camp (brackish marsh) in the winter/summer.

As long as you keep it clean I think it will hold up well in the marsh. We caught 20 catfish last weekend and had slime all over the carpet. Hit it with the hose when we got back to the camp and it looks brand new, mind you it's only 2 months old. The carpet does seem thicker/higher quality than other brands that I looked at.
I looked at a bunch of boats and none held a light to the quality of this one. The only other one I even remotely considered was Xpress but the attention to detail wasn't there and their 18' was only rated for a 90hp. Carpet wasn't cut flush or overlapped crappy, latches loose, ugly welds. Unless something better comes along, I'm now a ranger guy for life.

I looked at one but man it would be rough on bare feet. I have an 18 month old that I'm going to start bringing out this summer and wanted to soften falls as much as possible. I also have a shed that I keep it in so the carpet should last a lot longer.

Very solid hull. Local Trivia : that hull is a copy of the old Cajun Special mold made right here. Ranger top notch across the board...
