The only reason to buy a watch in todays world is if you are going to buy a real nice watch that can be passed down and you cant do that with $500.00. I would use my iPhone or either buy a $50.00 watch for activities that you want to do and not carry a phone and I would save my money.

There was a flat crystal Armida A2 with the ETA movement for sale the other day on Watchuseek for $480 shipped.
For budget divers I like the Deep Blue watches. Sapphire crystal and good automatics movement. They can be had in the $200 range.
Keep an eye on the watch forum classifieds. I grabbed a 5512 last year for $800

You are forbidden to buy a Burberry.
For the money, it's hard to beat a Steinhart Ocean 1 (and all their variants). They hold their value incredibly well and should you sell it later, assuming still in 90%+ condition, you'll get most if not all your money back. It's the best bang-for-the-buck watch in the $500 range, assuming a Swiss ETA appeals to you.

What's the difference between this Steinhart brand and something like Rolex?

Proprietary movement, better quality case, better quality movement, stronger crown stem, stronger crystal.
Want me to keep going?

There are a couple of very good builders who make a rolex copy using a rolex dial and hands with an ETA movement and sapphire crystal for like $300. They are actually damn good watches with high end components. It's kind of silly they use a rolex dial rather than a sterile dial but I digress. Only a jeweler/watch builder or hard core rolex fan would be able to tell a difference. From 5 feet away nobody will notice.

Just outside your budget but well worth it.

Marketing costs money. When you buy a Rolex, you're paying for race sponsorships, golf tournaments, etc. whereas Steinhart has virtually zero major advertising. You're buying a watch, not someone else's lifestyle.
Rolex will be better in all aspects than a Steinhart, but not $4000 better. Rolex also makes millions of watches annually and for the most part, they do not hold or appreciate in value. Like diamonds, they cost a lot due to good marketing

Name a watch that does appreciate in value. And name a mass produced watch that holds its value better than a Rolex.

It's on sale for $199 at Countycomm right now. That's a good price and it's absolutely a daily wearer.

Broke what are your feelings on TISSOT? Particularly TISSOT T-CLASSIC TRADITION MENS WATCH T0636101605200?
I despise thick watches and huge bezels.
